In year 6 we have been making Chilli con carne to represent the type of food Mayans had. I was in the vegetarian group with Campbell, Nesma, Amelia and Eleni. We had many different ingredients.
The ingredients we used:
First of we cut all the vegetables and put them in a pan. Next of we put all the passata in the pan with the vegetables and give it a good stir. The last thing we did was then put the kidney beans in a sieve so that the water would all drip out. We then added that in the pan and put paprika in. We then let it simmer for about half-hour and served it with nachos.

Frozen kingdoms is the name of our topic. We have been finding out about the North and South Pole.
The South Pole is in the Southern hemisphere. It contains many fascinating animals such as seals, penguins and whales.
The North Pole is at the very top of the world, in the Northern hemisphere. It contains many fascinating, majestic ice creatures, such as narwhal, ox, orca (otherwise known as the killer whale), snowy owl and the polar bear.
Explorers and Scientists
Lots of explorers have travelled to the North and South Pole. The most well-known are Scott, Shackleton and Byrd.
OUR RESIDENTIAL VISIT TO WINDMILL HILL
Going to Windmill Hill was hard because some people were missing their parents but as the days went by they were fine. The bus journey to Windmill Hill was at least 3 hours. Half way through we stopped to have lunch at Seven Sisters Country Park. We sat at the top of a hill overlooking the River Cuckmere. After when we finished our scrumdiddlyumptious lunch we went for a walk. We went down a really steep hill and eventually we came up to a swamp. While we were there we played a game. We had to find two different types of leaves, a feather and a rock.
Next we got back onto the coach and the next stop was Windmill Hill. When we finally arrived we got all our belongings and walked to our wooden cabins. We unpacked our stuff and went to have dinner! There were loads to choose from, there was even cold pizza and for pudding, scrummy doughnuts. There was also a salad bar, it was like an ‘all you can eat buffet’! After we gobbled up our food it was time for an evening activity. It was called ‘Round the World’, we had to answer questions about a particular country, such as Wales. If we got an answer right we would get a bonus point for our cabin.We did loads of activities throughout the week. First we always started with breakfast. At breakfast there were lots of choices such as bacon, beans and onions . . . delicious! After our tummies were full up it was time for some activities. My first activity was abseiling. At first I was very scared but when I did it I loved it. I would definitely do it again. After that it was archery. I loved archery, it was really cool. I even got it in the yellow circle. After that it was lunchtime. Lunch was delicious. After lunch one day we did a teddy bear competition. We had to make a scene with teddy bears. It was great fun.
Other activities on the trip were canoeing, giant swing, raft building, zip wire, trapeze, fencing, climbing wall, sensory trail and lots more. My absolute favourite was the giant swing. I went first with Campbell it was so much.Every night we had an evening activity, my favourite was the disco and wacky races. In wacky races we had to dress up in a wacky style! We did loads of races, one of them was a ‘dizzy dummy race’.
The disco was so much fun I really enjoyed it. Sadly Miss Goddard dislocated her knee.
Overall all we had an amazing trip and I would highly recommend all Year 5s to go on the trip next year.

MAD HAIR DAY!!!!!
On Thursday 16th February 2017, all of Year 5 – even the teacher assistants and teachers – made their hair go crazy. We all did this because in our year group we have a girl called Chloe (not me) that has Alopecia. An author called Sue Hampton came in and told us how she coped with Alopecia and how she became an author. After school, she was selling and signing her books to all of the children/adults at our school.
What is Alopecia?
Alopecia is a condition that makes your hair fall out. There are different types you could get – although it is not contagious – it runs through the family.
1) Alopecia Areata (AA) is when you have patchy bits of hair on your scalp.
2) Alopecia Totalis (AT) is when you lose all your hair on your scalp.
3) This the one sue has…
Alopecia Universalis (AU) is when you lose all your hair on your entire body – even you eyelashes and eyebrows.
There are a few others types as well……………
All the year groups and classes have been thinking about ‘Growth Mindsets’. At the start of Growth Mindset Week some year groups wrote down what we thought ‘Growth Mindsets ’ meant and what it was. We all had different ideas including: one test of all the subjects, thinking about things more deeply, etc!
None of us knew what it was but our teachers told us that we would begin to find out throughout the week. Also they told us that it wouldn’t just be for this week only, but that it was like ‘Anti – Bullying Week’ where we thought
about it a lot in one week but then carried on thinking about it at other times as well.
Throughout the week we all did many different activities about growth mindsets and fixed mindsets.
One of the things we learnt about was what all the different parts of the brain are and what they do.
We also designed a pit that you fell down if you had a fixed mindset – you always thought and said negative things – but if you had a growth mindset – where you always thought and said positive things you could climb back up.
Also we had a set of statements and had to work out whether they were from a growth mindset or a fixed mindset.

In art, we have been learning how to weave. We started by using paper and card. Next we learnt to weave using wool and twigs. We could choose whether we wanted to make a cross (with 2 twigs), or a rectangular/square shape (with 4 twigs). Also, we learnt that, to do a rectangular/square shape, you 1st need a warp (using lengths of wool), then wool to weave in and out of the warp. For the cross, we would go over one twig, wrap the wool around it, then go under the next twig and so on until we had done it for most of the cross/twigs…….

In Year 4 we are learning about the digestive system, it has been very interesting. To go with this, we watched some videos. The first video was Operation Ouch. They showed that the mouth, nose and stomach are all linked together. The second video that we watched was a cartoon. It showed us how our food and water travels through our bodies. The third clip was another Operation Ouch clip. What they did was that Doctor Chris swallowed a camera tablet. This showed the inside of Doctor Chris’ body.
This is how the digestive system works:
We learned that when you eat the food it flows into your mouth and then drops through your oesophagus. It then passes your liver and then lands in your stomach. It then travels through your small intestine. Then through your large intestine. After that, it finally comes through your rectum.
In Year 3 and 4 we performed our Easter production, ‘He’s Alive’. Most of Year 4 had to act on the stage and on the sides of the stage were Year 3, singing all of the songs with us. For this show we had to do lots of rehearsing and the first time we performed it was in front of the entire school but after that we had to do it three whole times in front of parents. The show was based on the Easter story, when Jesus died and came alive again. I think all of Year 4 and 3 really liked taking part in this performance!
ENGLISH – THE BOY WHO SWAM WITH PIRANHAS
In English we have started a new topic called “The Boy who Swam with Piranhas” it is actually a book by David Almond. We are doing lots of writing about it in our English lessons. In the story there is an abandoned factory and so we sketched our own thoughts of what the factory looked like. We weren’t allowed to use any colour because it was supposed to be a sad drawing of the old factory. The story is about a boy’s life which is turned around completely, but in the wrong way. His parents had died and he was left working in a fish canning factory.
In art we have been thinking about volcanoes and we have drawn our own but we didn’t draw them with felt tip pens instead we drew them with chalk and crayons on black sugar paper. We all really enjoyed this task but we got very messy and the chalk was quite hard to wash off.

English in year 4 has been very exciting because we are now moving on to designing our own chocolate bar. The first thing we did was testing some chocolate and gathered adjectives to describe what it tastes like. The four chocolates we tasted were milk, white, dark and mint my favourite one was the white chocolate because it tasted creamy and delicious. After, we tried different types of chocolate we had to list all the adjectives we could think of.
In Year 4 we are having swimming lessons at QMC. We have the swimming lessons on every Monday and Wednesday for 6 weeks. To get to QMC we had to go on a coach that was so long that it had more seats than the whole class! We had to sit next to our lovely talk partners on the bus. When we had got there we had to take a test to see how well we could swim and which level we were on e.g. shallow end or deep end. After we had done that the people in the deep end had to get into groups of 3 or 4. Over the next few weeks we will be practising our strokes. When we had got back from school everybody had 5 minutes break to have a snack and to let our hair dry. We had lots of fun!
MOUNTAINS AND VOLCANOES!
In year 4 we have been learning about mountains and volcanoes and how they work. First we learnt about the earth and what it is made from such as the inner core, outer core , mantle and crust.
The inner core of the earth is 800 miles thick, the outer core is 1,400 miles thick, the mantle is 1,800 miles thick and the crust is 5-20 miles thick. The crust is what we walk on and where we live. The mantle is made from molten rock, the outer core is made from liquid, nickel and iron, and the inner core is made from solid, nickel and iron!
For the volcano to erupt the mantle shoots out then breaks through the crust causing an explosion. The magma flows out of the volcano and turns rock solid.

In Year 4 we are learning about the Ancient Egyptians. It is really interesting to learn. On the first day of term we all brought in our homework that we had worked on during the holidays. Everybody had to include Ancient Egyptian facts in their homework. Everyone showed their homework to their class.

In art we have been learning about landmarks in the UK and first we did a blue sky backwash either a dark and stormy sky or a lovely blue sky then we sketched a landmark, for example Edinburgh Castle! After we had drawn the landmark we had some pictures up on the board so we could paint them in the correct colours. Once we had done our work we were allowed to paint any landmark in the UK we liked. I did Stonehenge and I think it was quite good. When we had finished our paintings we let them dry, they looked really nice. These pictures will show you just how nice they were!
In Year 4 we are learning about Paddington Bear. For our lessons in English we are helping Aunt Lucy find out which three landmarks in Hampshire she is going to visit. We all thought of three exciting places in Hampshire and then we wrote all about them in our work books. Some of them were:

Also we are helping Paddington Bear not crash into the Needles in computing. To help him we are going to try and make the old and broken lighthouse flash on and then flash off. First of all we made the light come on. It took a lot of teamwork with our talk partners. It was really hard to do. Then we made the lighthouse’s light come on and off again and again. It was harder than making the light come on but then our teacher finally helped us. We are also helping Paddington in maths by making different ways of getting to the jar of lovely marmalade. We all made ten or more ways of helping him. It was great fun!

We went on a bus to a tournament .The people who went were Connor, Taeg, Zachary, Liam, Ella and Elli. We played 6 matches we won two and drew one. We were on pitch 2. When we weren’t playing a match we practised our skills and passing. After we waited for our parents. While we were waiting I got a ball and we played passing.
We have been learning about how plants grow. There are male and female parts of a plant, like the stamen, the sepals, the ovule and the stigma. The petals make a scent to attract animals. The leaves suck up energy from the sun to make food. Compost help plants to grow this is called fertiliser. Bees help plants by spreading pollen.
We made pictures of plants and labelled the parts for homework, here are a few:
We are learning how to measure. We have also linked it to our science which is body bits. Yesterday we measured different body bits like, elbow to wrist, thumb to pinkie, neck to waist and knee to foot. We have also been measuring shapes and adding up the measurement. For our homework we made a zoo of animals. The enclosure had to measure the correct length.
In maths we have been learning about the column method .It is really FUN! This is how you do it.

LONDON VS PARIS
In Year 3 we have been learning about the cities London and Paris. London has lots of different buildings like Big Ben, the Queen’s palace called Buckingham Palace and the Gherkin. Paris has lots more buildings like the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral. We have been doing sketches of the buildings in London and Paris. An amazing fact is Daniel‘s Great Great Granddad put the first hand on the clock Big Ben.

We have been learning about the Stone Age. We have been doing cave paintings like hand prints, animals and hunters. We have also been making pretend camp fires. We have been thinking about how people in the Stone Age ate, slept and survived. They ate things like woolly mammoths , hyenas , bison and frogs and berries. They slept in a cave with a rug to cover them. We are going to write a story about the cavemen and we have read the story Stone Age Boy.
We have been learning about magnets in science. Don’t put a magnet near a computer because it could damage it. Magnets can stick to paper clips, bulldog clips, scissors and some coins. Some coins can’t stick to magnets.

When did Queen Elizabeth stop being Queen? Queen Elizabeth 1 died in 1603 and that’s when the Tudor period ended so there were no more Tudor Kings or Queens
Did you know why the Tudor period ended?…because Queen Elizabeth didn’t marry anyone so no one became King.
Queen Victoria’s family
Queen Victoria had 9 children! She married someone called Albert who sadly died and Queen Victoria wore black for the rest of her life.
We learnt some Tudor dancing and every week we had to practise. We filmed it and we had a competition against 2B and 2S, 2B won! On Kings and Queens Day we performed the dance again. Everyone did a great job!

CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
We are reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in Year 2 and we have started helping Mr Willy Wonka in maths. We learnt about RUCSAC which is a way of helping us to solve maths problems.
Here are some rules about RUCSAC:
The children that worked really hard were rewarded with a golden ticket.
We are also learning about how to keep healthy so we helped Mr Willy Wonka persuade the Oompa Loompas to eat more healthy food because they were eating lots of sweets and it wasn’t good.

In Year 2 we have been learning about space and the first man on the moon. The Americans and the Russians had a race to see who would be the first country to land on the moon. The first man was an American called Neil Armstrong. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins set off in July 1969 from Florida, USA. The rocket was called Apollo 11 and the Lunar module was called the Eagle. When the Command Module went back through the Earth’s atmosphere around it was fire and they landed in the sea.
In space there are lot asteroids hitting the moon which make lots of craters. There is zero gravity in space, which means that you jump super duper high.

Year 1 went on a school trip to Hillier gardens. One of the activities we did was pond dipping we had to dip a net in the pond and we had to try and catch a newt. We caught different sized and aged newts and had lots of fun. We also played a game which was like a trail and we had to find cards. We also went on an adventure walk, we went over a wobbly bridge and walked over a thin plank. We all had a lovely day.
This term we have been doing the golden mile. The golden mile is something that we do 3 times a week and it is where we try to run a mile around the playground, Big hall, Ball pit and the Field. We measure how many laps we have done by collecting a cube every time we have run a lap. When we get back to class we count the cubes and tell our teacher how many laps we did. She records it on a special website.
A TOY’S STORY….
In Year 1, we have been learning about new toys and old toys. We set up a museum for Reception children to come and visit. We sketched pictures of our old toys and new toys. Here is my sketch of a Clone Trooper.
In Year 1 we have been learning to count money and we are counting in pounds and pence. We have also been adding and subtracting money.
This term in English we have been learning about the wonderful St Marks Primary School.

In Year R we have some duck eggs! We are all really excited about the ducks hatching from their little eggs. For the last few years we have hatched chickens but this year we had the opportunity to have ducks instead. Some of us want the ducks to be bright yellow but some want them to be brown ducks! The children have been staring at the incubator that holds the duck eggs, for a really long time! Everybody is hoping that all of the eggs will hatch this year.
PEOPLE WHO HELP US…
In Year R we are learning about people who help us in and outside school. It is really interesting to learn. Some of the people, who help us, are:
This term we are really excited because firemen and policemen came, with their vehicles, and visited us for the day. They showed us all the equipment, that they use, and let us hold them. We are extremely excited to know what our new topic is for next term.
In Year R we have been learning about the Jolly Christmas Postman. We have also been learning about Humpty Dumpty and how we could protect him from breaking his egg shell. We chose a material and wrapped it round Humpty Dumpty. We used wrapping paper, paper, bubble wrap and cotton wool. Then we dropped him on the floor. For Anti-Bullying-Week we sang a song about our hands, feet and words and how we could keep them to ourselves.
In art we have been doing stamping with paint and … brussel sprouts! Then we put paint on our pinky finger and dabbed it onto the stamp. After that we blobbed a little bit of glue onto the holly wreath. Next we poured just a little bit of green glitter onto it to make pretend mistletoe!! In Maths we have been counting numbers and it is really hard!
On Chinese New Year we tried Chinese food like:
Vegetables covered with sauce
We liked the noodles best!
