Mr Applegate says…

… a huge thank you to Kat Long for being our fantastic IT Technician over the past few years. Today was her last day, and we’re grateful for how she has supported us and moved us forward in tech across the school.

… thank you to our volunteers who answered our plea for help to complete the farm. It’s 95% there!! Look what you’ve helped to create (and FOSM & parents of course!).

What’s next? We’ll be working on our wooded areas including Forest School and hedges at the back, as well as our Year 3 Reflection Garden.

Finally, I’m so proud of our children, staff and community. Leading our school is a real privilege.

Book Fair

In the coming weeks, we have our school book fair. It’s a chance for children to become excited about books and enjoy reading. There are a variety of books on sale, and the school gets commission for each book sold. This summer you get 3 books for the price of 2 with the cheapest book free!

Each class will visit the book fair stall. If you’d like your child to buy some books, please send them in with an amount between £3 and £12 in cash in a named envelope on the day below. For Year R, the book fair is after school in the Key Stage 1 playground – please can parents/carers attend with your child.

If you would prefer to pay online and not physically visit the book fair, you can do so here.

When is my child visiting the book fair?

Wednesday 14th June

  • Year R classes– after school with parents (on the KS1 playground weather permitting). Please allow a few minutes for us to set up.

Basingstoke Day – can you help?

Like our French Culture Day, we’re having a celebration of the diversity of ethnic cultures within Basingstoke. This will help the children understand that they are part of a wider and fascinating world, and celebrate the amazing cultures we have in our town. We’re calling it “Basingstoke Day”, and it will take place on Friday 14th July. We would love to hear from any parents and families from a variety of cultures, and would be prepared to get involved. We know from the success of our recent French Day that language, art, music and food might all play a part in this – but there is so much more that we might explore, and we would love to invite local people into the school to share their culture and country. There is a huge diversity of cultures now in Basingstoke, which has enriched our community so much in recent years. FOSM Sponsored Walk – Huge thanks to Dave and the team for putting this together. It raised over £2,000! Just incredible! This goes towards our outdoor improvements, amongst other things.

PE timetable updated – see our PE section below for the timetable for the next half-term. The only change is for Year 5 who will have PE on Mondays and Thursdays.

Raffle tickets for the summer fayre have gone home in bookbags this week – we are really looking forward to the summer fayre – do please save the date – it’s 1st July! The raffle is the biggest fundraiser of the event and we can’t do it without your help. Your help selling these tickets is very much appreciated as proceeds will help fund various projects at school including the outside area. All tickets to be return by Fri 23rd June please.

Summer Concert reminder – If your child learns a musical instrument in school, or plays in the school orchestra, please complete this form by Monday 5th June to indicate whether they can or cannot take part in our Instrumental Concert on Wednesday 5th July. Thank you

Farewell, Mrs Long

Our amazing IT Technician, Mrs Long, will be finishing at St Mark’s on Friday 9th June. Mrs Long has helped bring our tech and Computing curriclum into the 21st centuary. We are in such a great place thanks to her efforts, creativity and knowledge, and wish her all the best in her new ventures.

Agents of Change

Well done to Tom and Ally in Year 6, who swam 1k in around 35 minutes – raising over £300 for Cancer Research and Marie Curie. We are all very proud of these two Agents of Change!

And well done to Ruby in Year 6, who is an exceptionally good swimmer. She is currently in the top fastest age 11 swimmers in the UK, in a number of areas. WOWOW!

FOSM Sponsored walk – this Sunday 21st May!

The event starts from 1pm at the school via the main office entrance (not gates). Bring a drink, comfy walking shoes and remember there is no parking at school. Have fun too!

Sports Day – this Friday, 26th May!

We recently out an email regarding Sports Day and a reminder of your child’s team colour. Click here for more info. The starting positions are below:

Farm Update

Our 2 hens are happily laying eggs and are settling in nicely. The children have enjoyed seeing them at break and lunch times.

We are almost finished with our farm booking system, which will allow you and your child to visit our hens and look after them at either 8am or 6pm each day. Details to come. It’s not a small job to put together!

Walk to school Week!

Next week is Wellbeing week at St. Mark’s. 

Alongside this, we are going to be having our Walk to School Week to help to promote being outdoors, spending time together and physical exercise. We hope that your children will be able to take part in some way- walking, scooting or cycling for all or part of their journey. Please see the letter that your child brought home for further information.

Pastoral Drop-In Session

The St Mark’s pastoral team will be hosting a parent and carer drop-in session every half term, each with a different focus.

Our next parent drop in will be held on Monday 22nd May 8.30-9.30am in the church. We will chat through the different strategies we use in school under the umbrella of a therapeuric approach; many of which can be transferred to the home environment. 

Mrs Delves and Mrs Elms will also be on hand with a cup of tea and a biscuit to talk through any concerns you may have. Younger children welcome too!

Year 5 – Windrush Visitor

It was great to have Grace Powell come and speak to our Year 5 children, as part of their learning of the Windrush Generation. Grace was part of that, and now helps run the Basingstoke Caribean Society. She helped us understand what life was like, and how we should look out for others, and “We are one”. A reminder of the Willis Museum exhibition about the Windrush, now on. Details here!

Year 6 – Agents of Change

The children took part in a range of sporting activities inside and outside of the classroom. The children could do as many as they wanted in return for a small donation. They were placed into teams (2 from each class) and received points from the adults stationed at each sport. The winners could decide which charity they would donate the money to. We raised over £100 and the winning team were ‘The Ascending Pigeons’. The money is being shared between Cancer Research and WWF.

Music of the Week!

Zadok the Priest by Handel

One of Handel’s best-known works, Zadok the Priest has been sung prior to the anointing of the sovereign at the coronation of every British monarch since its composition. It would have been played at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

Year 6 SATS: We are so proud of the children. They had a brilliant attitude all week and worked so hard. Whilst the tests weren’t easy, they really made us proud and showed all of our learning behaviours. Go Year 6!

Ticks: In the last 3 weeks, we’ve had 2 parents report ticks on their children. Worth keeping an eye out as the weather improves.
 

Farm Update

How’s it all going to work? We’ll soon release a booking system that allows you as a family to book a slot at weekends and holidays to come in and feed the animals and spend time with them. It’s easy-peasy, and lots of fun. We’ll give you all the instructions, and a code to get into the side gate. You’ll also get to keep the eggs laid by the hens. The guinea pigs and rabbits should be in by half-term. During the school day, the children will have opportunities to visit the farm too!

In case you were wondering, the bees weren’t part of our plan… but thanks to Mrs Davis for sharing her expertise as a bee keeper.

  • A local family who donated our 2 child-friendly hens, the coup and all resources.

Sponsored Walk Details

A brand new event to highlight the importance of exercise, bring families together and help raise money for the school!

When: 21st May, from 1pm. 
Details: The route will start and end at school but will involve a 2.5km or 5km route utilising footpaths and parks around the area. Each participant who crossed the line will receive their very own medal. Decide your distance on the day. Bring your family and friends and lets raise money for our school! Coronation Day follow-up news!

What a wonderful coronation wall the children made – on display in the office foyer! Each class recreated an important part of the coronation event to represent:

Mr Dobel kindly donated 7 teddies to the school –  one for each year group as a memorabilia for the King’s coronation. The children also took part in different activities in our St’ Mark’s Fair. Winners are named below.

Music of the Week!

Fur Elise Jam by Piano Guys

This is a modern twist on a very well known piece of music by Beethoven. The Piano Guys are an American group who gained popularity through YouTube, where in 2011 they began posting piano and cello compositions combining classical, pop, film score and original music.
