Maths – Order decimals

The Maths focus for today is all about ordering decimal numbers. If you think back to yesterday’s lesson where we were comparing decimal numbers, we used a place value grid to look at these as a picture. You will be using place value grids today so that you can see what the number looks like and this will help you to put each number in order. Key vocabulary to think about today are the words ascending which means going from smaller to larger, and descending, meaning going from larger to smaller. In today’s work you will be ordering decimal numbers, but be careful to check whether you are asked to put the numbers in ascending or descending order. Make sure that you watch the White Rose video: Summer 1, Week 1, Lesson 4 and pause it when it asks you to have a go at the questions. Remember, you can watch the video as many times as you need to.

English and Science – Food Chains

Today we are going to start by thinking scientifically about our big cats. There is a PowerPoint to look at with some information and a link to a film clip explaining a little bit about the circle of life. The first task, if it is dry, is a field or garden survey, Have a look in your garden for signs of living things. You might wish to take some photographs or draw pictures, or you may just want to write them down. We have provided a table on the slides as an example if you would like to record that way. Think carefully about all the categories of things that you have seen. If it is wet and windy, have a look out of the window. 

Next, watch the clip from the Lion King. Listen carefully to what Mufasa says to Simba, and then look at the slides with information about food chains. Your task today is to create your own food chain with labels. I have done an example for the snow leopard. You don’t have to draw it, be creative, you might want to make a model out of Lego or play dough, or you might have some pictures you can cut out of a magazine (make sure that you ask first though). We are really looking forward to see how creative you can be, while recognising the different parts of the food chain.

Maths – Friday Family challenge

Please find attached the White Rose Family Maths Challenges. On their website they suggest that questions 1-5 are most suitable for Year 4 children, but if your child is confident, by all means let them go as far as they can. There is no video for this however I always find it useful to have a piece of paper and a pencil to jot down my train of thoughts. Do have fun having a go at them.

English and Science

Yesterday you looked at producers and consumers within a food chain. Hopefully you managed to get in the garden for a bit to do a field survey, I wonder what you found. I mentioned the pigeon and the crows (consumers) on my balcony, they were after the bird seed (producer). Today we have a bit of a quiz about food chains which you might like to have a go at, we have posted the answers too so you can check at the end. There is a PowerPoint attached as well which shows some different food chains, so you might be interested in that.

We would also like you to write a short explanation of your food chain. I have done one for the snow leopard as an example.

Maths – Compare decimals

Today’s maths is all about comparing decimals being mindful of the value of each digit and remembering to use the place holder 0 where necessary. The numbers today will be represented using place value grids and number sentences, with a focus on using the symbols > (greater than) and < (less than). I always remember that the larger number goes next to the open end of the symbol and the smaller number by the pointed. When you are answering the questions with the number sentences, you might find it helpful to draw your own place value grids to give you a visual idea. Another key point that the video makes is how you say the numbers when they involve tenths and hundredths. For example, the number 0.36 is said as zero point three six, not zero point thirty six, this is where place value grid is a helpful tool if you are struggling. Remember, today’s White Rose video is: Summer 1, Week 1, Lesson 3.

English – A Year in the Life…

For your English work today, we would like you to think about the lifestyle of your big cat. You should be able to use information that you have gathered over the week. I have written an example text: A Year in the Life of a Snow Leopard, I wanted to do a day in the life, but snow leopards do not work to a routine in the same that humans do, so I was able to look at their life over a year. In my example, you will see that I have split it into three sections, you might find my subheadings useful to use for you own writing. I have also written as though I am the snow leopard using first person, we would like you to try the same. Try to imagine you are that animal and think about what they might tell you if they were being interviewed – a bit like when we looked at Evie and the Jungle on World Book Day. Try to use the specific and technical vocabulary you have found from your research too.

Topic – Some interesting Big Cat clips

Sadly the sun isn’t shining like it was last week, however that does mean that it’s the perfect opportunity to snuggle up and watch some Big Cat videos!

We have had a look for some great short clips to share about Big Cats, this first clip explains the differences between the four big cats and how to identify them. We have added some links to other sites with footage of big cats, listen out for the dulcet tones of Sir David Attenborough in the BBC Earth’s Youtube channel, or even search through the Deadly 60 page to find some good clips about Big Cats. Have a think about some of the strangest and most interesting things that you have learned. You could just sit back and enjoy the videos or record some information if you wish.

Maths – Write decimals

In today’s Maths lesson, we will be learning how to write decimals using tenths and hundredths. We will be using place value charts and part whole models to support our understanding of this. It is important to remember to use zero (0) as a place holder where necessary. In the video, decimals are also linked to fractions, you will need to watch it carefully to make sure that you fully understand. English – Creating a ‘Deadly 60’ report

For your English work today, we would like you to write a Deadly 60 style report based on your chosen big cat. I have watched a few Deadly 60 episodes and noticed that Steve Backshall likes to use lots of alliteration in his reports so you might like to try to do the same, he also uses similes and powerful adjectives. I have written a report about the snow leopard as an example, they really are fascinating creatures. In order to do some research I used the National Geographic and National Geographic Kids sites, which we have provided links for, you might also wish to watch some of the Deadly 60 episodes to get an idea of how Steve Backshall reports. The reports are not long, but do give a clear explanation of the animals that he reports on. Think about how powerful your chosen cat is and how it uses its legs, tail and paws, how do these make it so deadly?

You might also like to film your report once you have written it!

Topic – Art observational drawing of a big cat

You’ve been working hard to find out lots of information about your chosen big cat. Now is your opportunity to use your observational drawing skills to find out a little more about your animal’s appearance. Miss Goddard will model how to use observational skills to draw a big cat in the Youtube Video below. You can search on Google images for a picture you would like to draw, but there are also some pictures below you can download and use if you wish. 

Please send in your drawings as we would love to showcase them in a gallery later this week.
