A note from Mr Applegate

We launched our Agent of Change challenge in worship on Monday. Ask your child what their class is going to do to make our world a better place! For those interested, we run Foodbank Friday, where you can pass food items to us and then we pass it to Foodbank. See details below.

Additional Maths Practice?

If you’re after some additional maths practice for home, you could purchase these books (the correct one for your child’s Year group). This is the scheme we follow at St Mark’s.

What’s your child learning this term?

A few reminders:

  • Is it your child’s birthday? Please don’t bring in sweets /cakes for the class – it’s really tricky for those with dietary requirements. Thank you though.
  • PE kit should not be logo’d hoodies, jumpers, tops, or football tops. On PE days, children should come to school wearing their green school jumper or cardigan. 
  • For a few weeks, the SCL capacity is limited a bit due to Dance Live practices in the main hall. We apologise for this, and thank SCL for their understanding.

Gustav Holst was an English composer, born in 1874 and died in 1934. The Planets suite is his most famous work made up of 7 pieces of music that bring the characters of the planets to life. Jupiter is known as the bringer of jollity.

Maths

This half term we have been learning about fractions, short multiplication, long multiplication and the short division method (bus stop method).

 

English 

This half term we have been learning about Spy Master (a book by Jan Burchett and Sara Vogler) and then we wrote our own story of Spy Master.   We would score this a 10/10 book and would definitely recommend you read it. After we finished that, we did a diary entry of a Tudor girl or a Tudor boy!

 

PE 

In PE, we did volleyball, which was very fun and a bit hard. We had to learn set shots, dig shots and one handed serves before playing some tournaments. We also did gymnastics which was a bit of a challenge but quite fun as we got to use lots of the benches and horses.

 

Art

We did self portraits of ourselves and things around it that link to us because the Tudor monarchs loved portraits too. To do these, we used our own sets of sketching pencils from B-6B and applied lots of different sketching techniques. Miss Burgess also came in and did mono printing of King Henry VIII’s wives with 5SP.

 

Computing

In Computing, we did our own animations using Stop Animation software on ipads. We used playdough and plasticine to create animations that were tudor themed, which was very cool! We learned a new skill of onion skimming too. Ask your child what that means… it has nothing to do with actual onions!

 

Science

In Science, we learned about reversible and irreversible changes. Our favourite experiment was then we put a fizzy tablets into different liquids, inside a film canister, to see which EXPLODED the fastest. We learned about how carbon dioxide was created and blew the lids off!

 

Horrible History!

In History, we have been learning about the Tudors and about King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I. We’ve learned about King Henry VIII’s wives, looked at his portraits and learned about how he made his own religion. When learning about Queen Elizabeth I, we also looked at her portraits and why she ended up looking younger in them. She once had an artist put in prison for painting a portrait on her that she didn’t like! Can you believe that? We had to decide at the end who was the greatest Tudor monarch. Why not ask your child who they chose and why?

 

French

We have been learning about the weather and we are going to do a weather forecast in French!

 

Music 

We have been thinking about different colours while listening to music all linked to the Hindu Holi Festival of Colour.

Year 4 had the most fantastic day on Wednesday 8th February. We were so impressed with the children's costumes and how amazingly they embraced the whole day. 

We had lots of fun doing a variety of activities whilst collecting as many denarii as possible. The day started with a Roman soldier lottery. The children had to choose a letter which would become their Roman name. Did you know that names ending in the suffix -us were male and -a were female. We had lots of names such as Julius, Julia, Claudius and Claudia. The children were also given a ranking in the army, ask them what they were!
We learnt about Roman mosaics and designed our own shields using the traditional colours: red,gold,black and silver.

The children's Roman numeral knowledge was put to the test in a maths challenge. They had to solve problems using lolly sticks to make different numerals.

No Roman Soldier day would be complete without putting the children through their paces with training. Roman soldiers would have had to carry their heavy kit and armour during 20 mile marches. These would have had to be completed in less than 5 hours. To replicate this, the children had to carry heavy bags around the playground whilst marching and following orders – in Latin!

Another activity saw the children learning about the weapons soldiers would have used when growing their empire. The children built catapults and enjoyed putting them to the test in a catapult competition. One of our favourite parts of soldier training was learning to throw the pilum (spear). Watch out Mrs Woods!

We all had the best day and lots of fun whilst learning about life in the Roman Army. 
We are now looking forward to starting our Geography topic after half term. We hope you all had a good week. See you Monday!

A note from Mr Applegate

It’s been a lovely start to term- the children have been working so hard. Highlights include:

  • Launching our “Agents of Change” badge and task. We want our children to see themselves as people who make our world a better place. If your child does something that makes our world a better place, please do nominate them via email!
  • We spent a whole day on Thursday looking at Maths in our school. The children are doign so well. Look out for a renewed focus on learning times tables!
  • Seeing progress in our Year R outside area continue.
  • Showing new parents around our school: they were amazed by the “please” and “thank you’s” of the children, and holding the doors open, and also how hard they were working. Keep it up!

This week’s top news & reminders

  • Thursday 19th January is census day. The number of meals we serve impacts our funding next year. Remember, all children in Year R, 1 and 2 receive free lunches every day. Therefore, it would be great to see as many school lunches ordered as possible. Our caterer’s (Pabulum) have put together a special, delicious menu. Save the date! Click here to see the menu
  • Snow plans. It’s not uncommon to have snow in Spring! Our plan for snow is to always assume school will be open unless you hear otherwise. We’ll communicate via email and website if anything changes.
  • School grounds during wet weather. Please avoid walking on any of the banks after school (this applies whatever the weather). Thank you!

    A few parents have asked about drainage on the paths, following the downpours and flooding this week. It’s a real challenge for us as the site wasn’t built in our favour. The pathway is also the runoff area for the fields and playgrounds, and drainage wasn’t installed when it was built. We are getting fresh quotes, but it is a very expensive job. We have to weigh up how we use the little money we have for these large projects, and primarily how we can benefit the children the most. We’ll keep you posted!

  • Vote for St Mark’s in Tesco! We are delighted to have been entered in the Tesco Community Grant Scheme. Customers** will be able to vote for our project to improve our school grounds. The project with the highest number of votes across our region will receive up to £1500, 2nd place up to £1000, 3rd place up to £500.

Music of the Week!

Adagio for strings: Samuel Barber

Samuel Barber was an American composer who lived from 1910 – 1981. Adagio for Strings was written in 1936 and is Barber’s most well-known compositions.
