What a busy start to the summer term!

Year 1 have had a brilliant and very busy start to the summer term! Armed with magnifying glasses and our colour hunt challenges, the children enjoyed using their senses to explore the meadow and all of the insects, trees and flowers there. We all felt so lucky to have such an amazing open space so close to school and wrote recounts of our walk during our English lessons.

The children used a variety of skills to design, assemble and evaluate their own model windmills. They persevered with their cutting skills and showed great teamwork, helping one another constructing their turbines. We thought about what Boris the Robot told us and kept reminding ourselves that ‘No way through isn’t true’.

The children enjoyed every single second celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee and a big highlight for all was our first Whole School Worship! Everyone certainly dressed to impress and we loved coming together for our street party lunch and dancing and singing on the field in the afternoon. The week flew by making bunting and paper chains, designing our own postage stamps, making a class contribution for a whole school timeline of the Queen’s life and learning to sing and dance to The Lambeth Walk. We even found the time to create a year group paving slab for our school Jubilee Garden! We hope that you all enjoyed your own celebrations during the half term break too!

What a busy and fun week in Year 1!

What a brilliant and busy week we have all had in Year 1. We started the week with our toy museum where the children loved sharing their learning from last half term with each other across the year group. We were also really excited about Year R joining us and we loved giving them a tour of our museum. It was great fun!

On Thursday, we visited Milestones to help start our new project, ‘On the Move’. The children were very excited about the coach trip and then loved looking at and exploring all the different vehicles. We learnt all about Thornycroft and loved sitting on the old bus, comparing it to the coach that we arrived on. The children were brilliant at using their observation skills to find different parts of the vehicles and showed great curiosity throughout the museum. On Friday, we had another exciting day in Year 1 celebrating our World Book Day. The children loved seeing everyone’s costumes and talking about the different books they were from. Throughout the day, the children were very creative exploring different books and creating their own class displays.

Year 1 – It’s all about toys!

The children have all started back to the New Year in a brilliant way. They are enjoying the new project of ‘A Toy’s Story’ where we have been learning about different materials and their properties as part of our Science learning. The children have loved exploring the materials and thinking about the best material for Teddy’s coat so that he doesn’t get wet in the rain! Last week, we thought about toy robots and used our imagination to create our own robot collages.

As part of our English, we have been learning to retell the story of ‘The Tiger who came to Tea’. The children have loved putting actions to the story and are enjoying writing their own versions using a different animal. Maybe ask your child to tell you their story. In maths, we have been thinking about comparing and ordering numbers within 20. The children have been thinking about why a number is greater or less than another and using their knowledge of tens and ones to help compare the numbers. Over the next week, we will be learning about length and height where the children will learn to use rulers to measure accurately to the nearest whole centimetre. We’d like to thank all the parents and carers at home who have supported their children over the last week with home learning. The children have been producing some great work at home and have settled back to class well when they return.

Fantastic learning in Year 1

What a great end to the Autumn term in Year 1. The children have loved our project all about the polar regions and enjoyed learning all about the different animals they would find there. Over the last couple of weeks, the children have made some great clay tiles with different polar animals on.

Christmas is definitely being enjoyed within the year group with lots of artwork inspired by the season and the children are really excited about the holidays and the party tomorrow.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support with your children and their learning. May you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We hope you all enjoy the break with your families.
