English – Describing jungle animals

Today’s job is to describe some of the animals that we might find in a tropical rainforest or jungle.  Can you think of some words that tell us what the animals are like? You might like to look online for some images so you can describe your chosen animal in more detail.  Click here for a word mat with jungle animals that you can use to help you choose.   

I have done an example of a tiger, like the tiger from our story today!

Your grown-ups can write for you or if you would like an extra challenge (and more rainbow points for your charts!) then you could use your Fred Fingers to write as many sounds as you can hear for the words.

The Green Jungle

We are going to explore the colour green today and make a green jungle picture.  You could paint, collage cut and stick or draw using lots of different coloured greens.  Build your jungle picture up by adding drawings of lots of different leaves made from different shades of green.  Next, pick some green jungle animals to draw separately.  Can you remember the animals from the clip?  There was a green caterpillar, frog, beetle, snake, bee, green parrot and a green lizard too!  Which ones will you choose?  Your grown-ups might be able to find clips online to help you with how to draw the animals that you choose.  Once you have drawn them cut them out and hide them in your jungle.

Look at this amazing artist as he paints a jungle painting. Click here to watch.  He was inspired by a famous artist called Henri Rousseau. Rousseau once painted a tiger hiding in the jungle.  The painting is called Tiger in a Tropical Storm.  Here it is:

Do you remember where our journey in the hot air balloon took us?   What is it like there? How is it different to our last adventure in the United Kingdom visiting a castle?

Listen to today’s story read to you by Mrs Rushton.  It is called “Walking through the jungle”.

Listen to the jungle sounds clip below again.  Can you close your eyes and try to imagine being in the jungle?  Talk to your grown up about what you might see.  Imagine walking through the sweltering, hot, shadowy jungle.  You can see enormous trees with huge, thick trunks and large, wet, green leaves.

Today you are going to write about walking through the jungle.  Can you describe what it might be like?  Think about what you might see, hear, feel and smell and talk to your grown up to plan what you might like to write.

Today we are going to be meeting our next Numberblock … Numberblock 16! We are going to find out all about Numberblock 16 and we will be finding out that “10 and 6 more make 16”. We will also be exploring how Numberblock 16 gets cut in half and is made up of lots of his Numberblock friends.

There are two options for your third activity today.

OPTION 1: Building a Jungle Hideout 

Can you make a jungle den or hideout?

You can either make one big enough for you to get into, or you could make a model of one using lego, duplo or any other construction blocks you have.

OPTION 2: Snakes!

Watch out, if you walk through the jungle, a snake might slither out of the trees above and surprise you! Can you use your fabulous cutting skills to cut out a spiral snake like this? 

You can either print out a template – click here to download, or a grown up can draw one on a piece of paper like this:

Colour in or draw patterns on your snake before you cut it out. Look at the different patterns below that snakes scales make.

Cut it out carefully, starting from the outside. Remember to hold the paper steady with your free hand. Check you are holding the scissors correctly too, using the right fingers. Check the picture below for the correct scissor grip.

English – Rainforest Fact Finding

It’s time to go up up and away in our hot air balloon again! Click on the Google Earth icon below to begin today’s journey.

Grown-ups – Display Google Earth zoomed in on Bodiam castle where we visited last time.  Wave goodbye to the castle and to the UK. Now search for the Amazon River, Brazil. Off we go in our hot air balloon!

This is the Amazon River in Brazil, South America.  It is the second longest river in the whole world!  Have a look at the map below. Can you follow the river across South America?

When you look with Google Earth, what is all the green around the river?  This is the Amazon Rainforest!  Search on Google Earth for the Amazon Rainforest.  The Amazon Rainforest is the world’s largest tropical forest. Look at the map below to see how much of South America it covers.  Zoom in on Google Earth slowly and notice how the green brocolli looking bumps become treetops as you get closer!  Now zoom out to see how big the rainforest is.  Look at the surrounding area – can you see roads / buildings etc? What do you think it might be like in this place in the world?  How does it different to where we live? What animals do you think might live here?

Next read the slides together and then see if you can find some facts to help you answer the rainforest animal questions.

Jungle Music

Listen to the clip of jungle sounds below.  What can you hear? Which creatures can you hear?

Now listen to the clip of some jungle drumming.

These drums are called bongos and are played using just your hands like this: 

Can you find objects around your house that you could use as a drum? Maybe a box, upside down pot, pan or plastic bowl?

Set them up all together and see if you can make your own jungle music! Can you drum out any repeating patterns?
