Good Morning Year 2

Hello Year 2,

How are you today? We hope you are all well. Its a Friday, and its also the first day of May! We hope you have all had a hearty breakfast, and are ready for another day of learning. Remember to try and find time to read a book today as it is one of the most important tasks that you can do to support your learning and you can find lots of hidden treasures in a good book. It can take you on adventures to different times and places. Where will your book take you today?

We have loved reading your pirate stories. You have all tried incredibly hard with these, and you should be really proud of you work!

We can reveal that you have all been fantastic pirates, and have found all of the clues to reveal all of the parts of the treasure map! Your last challenge is to unscramble the pieces of the map, and put them together to find where x marks the spot! Can you find where the treasure is? If you are successful, you can unlock the special treat that you have all earned for all of your hard work!

HeartSmart Worship

As it is Friday, you will find a lovely HeartSmart worship to do together here. We are looking at HeartSmart ‘Don’t Rub it in- Rub it Out!’ linked with our Christian Value of Forgiveness. There is a super Boris video to watch too.

Pirate Clues! Ahoy Me Hearties!

Avast Me hearties- we found the last two pieces of the map! One was near the phone and the other under the table in between a load of school books!

Now we’ve just one thing left to do together! Solve the map and get the treasure!

Use the code to get to the map and put the pieces back together. Remember, Me Hearties, X marks the spot.

We would love to hear from you and see your lovely work, so please do not hesitate to email us at year2@stmarksce.org.uk. Enjoy your day!

Many thanks,

English

In English today, you can complete your usual Friday grammar activity. Remember, if you have decided to carry on with writing your pirate adventure story then you can miss this today.

Once you have completed your task you can check your answers. If you don’t have access to a printer, it is fine for you to talk through each question and discuss your answers rather than write them down if things a little easier.

Have fun and be great grammar detectives!

Daily Time Fillers

Here are some additional activities for you to have a go at each day if you choose to. Please feel free to do as much or as little of these as you wish. We have added a handwriting booklet (the entire alphabet) that you could work through very gradually, not in one go. You can either print the booklet, or do this onto paper of your own at home. We look forward to seeing how amazing your handwriting will be when we see your work. The Common Exception Words should also be learnt gradually, by selecting 2 or 3 words a week that you should aim to learn along side your weekly spellings.

20 minutes of reading either a school book or a home book.

Practice your 2,5 and 10 times tables using TTRockstars, or a different method.

English

In English today, you will be writing your exciting Pirate Adventure stories. We are really looking forward to these and hope you are too. The presentation below shows one way that you could go about your writing and has broken the writing into sections. You can do this too if you’d prefer and you can write your story over two or three days if that makes it more manageable, breaking it into a beginning, middle and an end. For reluctant writers, this can make the task less daunting and more manageable. If you do this, remember to read where you have got to before you carry on with your writing so that you don’t miss anything exciting. Tomorrow’s lesson, is a grammar hammer but you can miss this if you’d prefer to continue with your story so be as flexible as you like.

Some children may wish to include pictures in their stories too and they may even want to have chapters or turn it into a little book. This is fine and if children want to type their stories, then we are happy for them to do so. Another incentive that we find useful in school is allowing them to write in pen.

Try to use as many of the different skills that we have learnt over the past few weeks in your writing as you can: expanded noun phrases, similes, compound sentences and question and exclamation sentences. These help to make your writing exciting and engaging for the reader. Above all have fun and enjoy being an author! We can’t wait to see the end results and all of your super ideas!

Below is a selection of paper with a pirate themed border that you can use if you’d like. If your child may work better doing a bit of a picture and then some writing, you could use the half lined paper as there is a space for a picture too. Feel free to write directly into books that you have or onto other paper. Some children may like to type it into the computer too. All ways are fine.

Maths

Today in maths, we are going to have a go at some problem solving, using some of the skills we have learnt so far this year in maths. Get your thinking caps on!

As with the other maths lessons shared, there is a video to help explore this concept, as well as an activity sheet to complete. You can then check your answers using the answer sheet provided. Please click on the first link below to access the White Rose page, before completing ‘Lesson 4’ in ‘Summer Term – Week 2’. Please email us if you have any questions regarding this. Good luck!

Please click here to access today’s additional maths challenge if you have finished today’s maths and would like to push yourself even further.

Topic

Today’s extra activity is to continue with our science topic on plants, specifically thinking about the life cycle of a bean. Firstly click here to read a story about the different stages in the life cycle of a bean, and have a chat about how many stages there are, and what the bean looks like at each stage.

Once you have finished the story, have a go at sequencing the bean pictures below in the correct order. Can you label the root, shoot and leaf on the longest bean? If you do not have access to a printer to print the bean pictures, you could have a go at drawing and colouring the beans at the different stages of the cycle. Have fun!

Daily Time Fillers

Here are some additional activities for you to have a go at each day if you choose to. Please feel free to do as much or as little of these as you wish. We have added a handwriting booklet that you could work through very gradually, not in one go.

Remember the scholastic learning zone too!

Practice your 2,5 and 10 times tables using TTRockstars, or a different method.

Practice your weekly spellings which will be provided below, and the Year 2 Common Exception Words.

English

In English today, we will be beginning our planning for our pirate adventure story. We have a story starter and a planning sheet for you to complete. We will use this to guide our writing today. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can write your plan directly onto a sheet of paper. The pdf flipchart below breaks our planning down into steps so you can work through this today as you complete your plan.

Remember this is your story, so feel free to add in any extra details that you like. You may also change your ideas after you plan it and that is fine too. Planning is basically an opportunity to try and test out ideas. The important thing is to make sure you have an exciting part and then a good ending. We are really looking forward to reading them after you have written them tomorrow. Talking about your story once you have planned it is another way to plan a successful story. Try telling it to members of your family using story telling language: first, next, suddenly, out of the blue…

Maths

Today in maths, we are going to be continuing our work on measurement, exploring the four operations with length. This involves using what we know about adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing to help us solve problems involving length.

As with the other maths lessons shared, there is a video to help explore this concept, as well as an activity sheet to complete. You can then check your answers using the answer sheet provided. Please click on the first link below to access the White Rose page, before completing ‘Lesson 3’ in ‘Summer Term – Week 2’. Please email us if you have any questions regarding this. Good luck!

Topic

Today’s extra activity is about the pollination of flowers and shows how flowers reproduce. There is a short piece of reading and then you can stick and sort the pictures into the correct order. You could also draw your own pictures if you’re feeling creative or if you can’t print it out.

Daily Time Fillers

Here are some additional activities for you to have a go at each day if you choose to. Please feel free to do as much or as little of these as you wish. We have added a handwriting booklet that you could work through very gradually, not in one go.

Practice your weekly spellings which will be provided below, and the Year 2 Common Exception Words.

Good Morning Year 2

Hello Year 2,

How are you today? We hope you are all well and have been eating your fruit and vegetables to keep the dreaded scurvy away! Hopefully you have had a good rest, and are ready for another day of learning. What is one thing that you are thankful for today? Perhaps its the weather, time with your family, or your toys. Even at times as strange as these, it can really put a smile on your face to spend some time thinking about the things we are really thankful for. We like to think of these as ‘Hidden Treasures’ which is our topic at the moment. You may spot some hidden treasures when you head out for your walk today. Look at all of the plants and nature around you. Think about how things are changing and growing. Despite all that is happening, we have a lot to be thankful for.

English

In English today, we will be continuing our work on compound sentences whilst also learning about the characters that appear in adventure stories. Most adventure stories have villains and heroes and we can tell whether characters are nice (heroes) or nasty (villains) based on how they act or behave and by what they say. For today’s activity, we will use some speech bubbles to help us think about what the heroic and villainous characters might say to each other. Whilst we do this, we can try and show the character’s personality and practise some of our compound sentences. We have included a speech bubble example sheet in the resources section below, to give you some ideas.

Optional extra

As an extension task, your child may wish to explore how we write dialogue into our stories. The last two pages of the pdf flipchart below give some examples. Your child may like to go back and look at each of their speech bubbles and then write these as direct speech, using speech marks. This is a year 3 expectation but many children in year 2 like to write speech into their stories, so we often include a discussion of this in our classwork to begin to teach the children how to do this. Feel free to give it a go and challenge yourselves but there is no expectation that children must be able to do this in Year 2.

Maths

Today in maths we will be continuing with our measurement unit, looking specifically at ordering lengths.

To do this, as suggested with the previous activities, you could approach this practically to start with by measuring a selection of toys or items that you have in the house. You can then consider which is the longest, and which is the shortest, before ordering them with the shortest at one end, and the longest at the other. If you used items to help with yesterdays maths, perhaps you could use the same items to allow for consistency, re-enforcing prior learning.

As with the other maths lessons shared, there is a video to help explore this concept, as well as an activity sheet to complete. You can then check your answers using the answer sheet provided. Please click on the first link below to access the White Rose page, before completing ‘Lesson 2’ in ‘Summer Term – Week 2’. Please email us if you have any questions regarding this. Good luck!

Topic

Today’s extra activity is linked with our science. We are going to be thinking about plant life cycles. Go to the BBC link below to watch 2 short clips about plant life cycles and how dandelion seeds disperse. You can also have a little read of the ‘Year 2 Science- plant life cycle’ pdf below. There are then some cutting and sticking activities that you may like to try, or you could complete the BBC quiz, or you could also see if you can collect dandelions when you go on your daily walk and see if you can spot different points in their life cycle.

Daily Time Fillers

Here are some additional activities for you to have a go at each day if you choose to. Please feel free to do as much or as little of these as you wish. We have added a handwriting booklet that you could work through very gradually, not in one go.

Practice your weekly spellings which will be provided below, and the Year 2 Common Exception Words.
