Year 1 have had a great start to Spring 2. The children are loving their new topic, ‘On the Move’ and thoroughly enjoyed themselves on our school trip to Milestones. The children loved exploring the historic vehicles and getting up close to the Thornycroft vehicles. Over the last week, the children have recounted their trip experiences and have written some wonderful recounts of the day. One of their highlights was sitting on the 1940s bus and listening to the story, ‘The Naughty Bus’.

We also had a wonderful time on Friday, celebrating World Book Day. The children’s costumes were fabulous and it was great seeing so many different characters across the year group. The children loved learning about different stories and also creating artwork for a door in their classroom. Can you guess what books the children learnt about from these photos?

Year 1 Team

The children in Year 1 have loved learning about toys this half term. They learnt about how teddy bears have changed over time and enjoyed creating their own versions of ‘Build a bear’ as an example of a modern teddy bear.

They have also loved exploring their creativity as ‘illustrators’. They have learnt about the author and illustrator, Mike Brownlow, and have enjoyed learning about his illustrations in his book ‘Little Robots’. The children have explored different using felt tips and pencils and have created their own ‘Little Robots’ ready for a class book.

As our project, ‘A Toy’s Story’ draws to an end this week, the children are looking forward to setting up their own toy museum and sharing with you what they have learnt about toys. Please come along and visit your child’s classroom on Wednesday 8th February, 8.30-8.45am to see their toy museum.

Year 1 Team

Year 1 have started this term brilliantly. They are loving their new project ‘A Toy’s Story’ where they have begun learning about toys from the past. The children have learnt about toys from the Victorian period and also the 1940s. Later this term, they will learn about toys from the 1960s and modern toys. As they learn about the different toys, they will think about what makes a toy older than another and how things like the materials have changed to make them. Have you got a favourite toy from your childhood that you could talk to your child about? I’m sure they would love to hear about it.

In our English this term, we have been learning about ‘The Tiger who came to Tea’. The children had great fun using their imagination and becoming authors by writing their own versions of the story. Maybe your child would like to retell their story to you?

The children are now working towards their toy museum outcome in a couple of weeks. As part of this, we are asking for the children to bring in a toy to share at the museum. Please see the attached letter, which was sent home last week.

This term, Year 1 have loved being polar explorers and learning about the North and South Poles. The children have enjoyed finding out about the different animals there and what it would be like to live in the polar lands. As part of our art project this half term, we learnt about the Inuit artist Kenojuak Askevak. The children used her artwork to help inspire them when creating their own clay tile.

They also explored other ways of manipulating clay and plasticine and created some amazing animal and Christmas inspired mini sculptures.

The children performed wonderfully in their Christmas play this term and they loved showing you all their enthusiasm with their singing. Thank you everyone for coming along and supporting them.

Year 1 have had a great start to the new term. We loved becoming Polar Explorer’s and finding out all about the animals we might find in the North and South Poles. The children created some amazing artwork as part of their explorer day as well.

Over the last week, we have started learning about the world and finding out about the different continents and oceans of the World. Maybe ask your child to see if they can name any of them. In English, the children have loved writing their own versions of the story, ‘The Great Explorer’ and in maths we have been learning about adding and taking away numbers within 10 using counters and numbers lines to help us and then recording the number sentences to match.
