School Poem

A very special poem written by Year 2 about our school

David Bouchard’s book, “If you’re not from the prairie”, is the starting point for our Year 2 geography local study. The beautiful insights really help us think about the place where we live. We use it as a stimulus for creative writing. Before thinking about Hatch Warren, we considered our immediate surroundings, our school, and what makes it special for us. These are the children’s ideas turned into a class poem loosely based on the style of David Bouchard in “If you’re not from the prairie”.

If You’re not from St Mark’s…

If you’re not from St Mark’s you don’t know our school,

You can’t know our school.

Our school is a place full of love and kindness,

Where everyone is included and our talents are nurtured.

If you’re not from St Mark’s you don’t know our worships,

You can’t know our worships.

Our worships are a time to sing, for quiet reflection

And to join together as one.

If you’re not from St Mark’s you don’t know our classrooms,

You can’t know our classrooms.

Our classrooms are places to learn, to celebrate our achievements,

And to build friendships.

If you’re not from St Mark’s you don’t know our creativity,

You can’t know our creativity.

From art and dancing to our orchestra and choirs,

We have opportunities to express ourselves and shine.

If you’re not from St Mark’s you don’t know our School Song,

You can’t know our School Song.

Our School Song is as unique as our school,

Reminding us of our Christian values and the warmth of God’s love.

If you’re not from St Mark’s you don’t know our school grounds,

You can’t know our schools grounds.

Sycamores, maples and mighty oaks frame our field,

A place for adventures where our only limit is our imagination.

If you’re not from St Mark’s you don’t know our lion,

You can’t know our lion.

A symbol of strength to help us on our learning journey,

And give us wings to follow our dreams.

If you’re not from St Mark’s you don’t know our school dog,

You can’t know our school dog.

Simba brings fun to our school every day,

Lifting us when we are blue and sharing in our joy.

If you’re not from St Mark’s you don’t know our Learning Behaviours,

You can’t know our Learning Behaviours.

Taking responsibility, risks and pride in our learning,

Developing curiosity, creativity and resilience,

And learning respect and teamwork.

Behaviours to last us a lifetime.

If you’re not from St Mark’s you don’t know our compassion,

You can’t know our compassion.

But it spreads further than our building and grounds,

To our local community and beyond,

Serving and supporting the best that we can.

If you’re not from St Mark’s you don’t know our High Five,

You can’t know our High Five.

Strengthening our hearts

To help us learn to love ourselves and value others.

If you’re not from St Mark’s you don’t know our journey,

You can’t know our journey.

From when we are 4 to when we are 11 we are part of a family,

Where everyone is welcome and everyone is valued.

But in the years to come,

The gifts of that journey will spread well beyond our school.

Just you wait and see.
