6th May Newsletter – Jubilee Non-Uniform, NSPCC, FOSM, Reports and more

A note from Mr Applegate

There’s lots of information this week, so I’ll keep it brief!
  • Non-uniform next Friday, 13th May: donate 70p (for the Jubilee!), to support the revamp of our outside areas – thank you! Why not wear something red, white and/or blue?
  • Unfortunately we’ve had to cancel the FOSM car wash on Saturday 14th May.
  • Good luck to our Year 6 children next week as they sit their SATs. They are already amazing, and we’ve always been very proud of them :)
  • Match funding – we really need a company to help double our FOSM fundraising! See letter emailed out.
  • Our outside areas are tired, and we’d like your input into what it could look like. We’ve invited an expert to work with us to design a plan! We really need 10 parents/carers to join us for 2 easy and fun workshops where you can suggest ideas and be part of our transformation. Tues 7th June @ 2pm for an hour, and Mon 20th June @ 2pm (both please!). Sign up here!
  • Last Tuesday, we emailed out a simple report for the Spring term (for Years 1-5 only). The email subject was “Spring 2022 report” – check your spam if you didn’t receive it.
Have a great weekend! Mr Applegate

In other online safety news, did you know that…

According to this Ofcom report…

  • Nearly all children went online in 2021 (99%); the majority used a mobile phone (72%) or tablet (69%) to do so.
  • Using video-sharing platforms (VSPs) such as YouTube or TikTok was the most popular online activity among children aged 3-17 (95%).
  • Among all types of online platforms, YouTube was the most widely used by children; 89% used it, compared to half using TikTok. But TikTok was more popular than YouTube for posting content.
  • A majority of children under 13 had their own profile on at least one social media app or site; 33% of parents of 5-7s said their child had a profile, and 60% of 8-11s said they had one.
Just four in ten parents of 3-17s knew the minimum age requirement for using most social media; 42% correctly said 13. Four in ten parents of 8-11-year-olds said they would allow their child to use social media (38%).
  • More than a third of 8-17s who gamed online played with people they didn’t know (36%); overall, 16% of 8-17s chatted to people they didn’t know, via the messaging/ chat functions in games.

Walk to School Week

This year we will once again be taking part in Walk to School Week. This will run from Monday 16th May to Friday 20th May. We are hoping that lots of children will join in with this challenge and take part in some way. Your children can take part by walking, scooting or cycling to school for all or at least part of their journey. During this week, we will also be talking to the children in school about the benefits of walking to school and also reminding children how to stay safe. We hope that you will encourage your child to join in!

FOSM - Support Our School!

About FOSM

blankThe ‘Friends of St Mark’s’ (FOSM) was formed early in the life of the school. All parents are automatically members and our committee organises social events for children and adults and fund-raising events such as Key Stage discos, Easter Egg Hunts and Summer Fun days.

Over the last few years the ‘Friends’ have donated money that has contributed towards extra resources to benefit the children at St. Mark’s which has included playground equipment, books for the school library, and general school funds. We are now a registered charity, too. Charity number: 1188879
