11th March Newsletter

A note from Mr Applegate

It’s been great to see our children working so hard this week. As a school, we’ve been thinking about how we teach writing – it can often be the most difficult subject to engage all children in, especially boys, and especially after lockdown. Thanks to everyone’s efforts,  our children across the school are enjoying writing and making great progress. The quality of vocabulary is very impressive, as is their imagination and handwriting.

Our covid numbers are slowly creeping up, which is to be expected. Thank you for keeping us informed via the covid email addres. Details here.

We’ve noticed a small increase in sickness and vomiting across our student population this week. Please be on the lookout for your child if they are feeling unwell. Some of these children have also tested positive, but not all. A reminder that children should be off school for 48 hours since the last episode.

Finally, a huge thank you for your donations towards our FOSM fundraising activities. We really appreciate it.

Have a great weekend! Mr Applegate

A near miss!

One of our traffic patrol crossing team (Lollipop Lyn) informed me yesterday that we had a near miss.

Lyn reminded me of three rules which may be helpful to share with your child:

  1. Everybody must stand behind the yellow lines.
  2. Everybody must wait until the traffic patrol officer is in the middle of the road and says it is  okay to cross.
  3. If a child is asked by an parent/carer to hold hands, they must do this.

And a fourth rule for adults – please be careful when you are on your phones! 📱

Masked Reader – World Book Day!

We had lots of fun on World Book Day and lots of fabulous entries to our Masked Reader Competition. It was incredibly difficult to pick but our winners are:

  • Year R: Evie H
  • Year 1: Konrad H
  • Year 2: Jack S
  • Year 3: Jack N
  • Year 4: Harry S
  • Year 5: Rosie B
  • Year 6: Ethan A

Congratulations to them all. Each child will receive a book as a prize. These books have been generously provided by Martin&Co Estate Agents in Basingstoke and The Night Owl’s Book Nest. We thank them both for the gift and the many parents and staff who voted for us.

FOSM News and Dates

  • Thank you so much for your generosity with our FOSM Reading Challenge! There’s still time to bring any money in. The team are busy counting!
  • We still require some help filing a tax return. The accounts are in good order, we just need an accountant to help with the return. If you can help, please email treasurer.fosm@stmarksce.org.uk

Wear a Hat Day – 25th March

On 25th March, we’re celebrating Wear a Hat Day. This is run by Brain Tumour Research. Some of you will remember Jayden, a St Mark’s pupil who passed away of a brain tumour (the blue and red chair by the KS1 playground is in memory of him – painted in Spiderman colours!).

We’ll have donation buckets on the gate if your child would like to wear a hat to school (with normal school uniform!). Thank you.

In worship this week…

We thought about forgiveness. Perhaps chat through what the picture below means to your child.

FOSM - Support Our School!

About FOSM

The ‘Friends of St Mark’s’ (FOSM) was formed early in the life of the school. All parents are automatically members and our committee organises social events for children and adults and fund-raising events such as Key Stage discos, Easter Egg Hunts and Summer Fun days.

Over the last few years the ‘Friends’ have donated money that has contributed towards extra resources to benefit the children at St. Mark’s which has included playground equipment, books for the school library, and general school funds. We are now a registered charity, too. Charity number: 1188879
