Y6 PGL Residential

Year 6 have been INCREDIBLE on their PGL residential week in Osmington Bay. It’s our new favourite PGL centre with great staff, accomodation, activities, food and weather. The Year 6 childrens’ manners have been impeccable! Our own staff have put in everything to make it a really successful week. Thank you everyone.

Parking Issues

We’ve had lots of issues with parking recently, particularly where it is making roads and paths unsafe for those walking to school. The police, traffic wardens and PCSOs will be patrolling. Let’s make safe and legal decisions when parking. Parking on paths makes people walk on the road which could be dangerous. Thank you.

Red Riding Hood

The Parish of Basingstoke Down is delighted to offer you a family treat this festive season! We have invited Saltmine Theatre to bring their production of ‘Red Riding Hood’ to Hatch Warren Community Centre on Saturday 23rd November, 6-8pm. This modern-day twist on a classic fairy tale with a positive message about belonging is now open for booking. Do join us!

We are charging a small fee for tickets- £3 for individuals and £10 for a family of up to five. All of the money that we raise will be shared between the charities supported by St Mark’s School (in the case of St Mark’s it will go to the Mud House Foundation) and Kempshott Juniors (in the case of Kempshott Juniors it will go to the Lily Foundation). See you there!

This piece of music composed by John Williams was written for a film called Saving Private Ryan which was set in World War 2. It is a beautiful piece of music written to remember all those who lost their lives in war.

Reeva celebrated the annual festival of Navaratri at the Basingstoke Hindu Society.  She won a prize in a competition for the Best Dressed attendee.  Congratulations Reeva!

Breakfast Club

Did you know we offer a daily breakfast club with 3 different start times?

The sessions are as follows:

Sessions with our supervised drop-off system in the school car park:

  • 7.30am with breakfast -£5.00 per day
  • 8.00am with breakfast – £2.75 per day

Sessions where you will need to park off-site and walk in:

  • 8.20am without breakfast – £1 per day

Prayer Space

Thank you to our wonderful Christian Voice Ambassadors who have shared our Prayer Space brilliantly this week, supporting their classes and other year groups in exploring the space. 
 
Also, many thanks to Rev Nicola, Rev Kim, Jeannette Welton and volunteers from our local churches in The Parish of Basingstoke Down, for their help with supporting and running the Prayer Space this week. They have helped to make it a special experience for all of the children.

Music for the Royal Fireworks by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)

Music for the Royal Fireworks is a group of five pieces for orchestra composed by German George Frideric Handel in 1749. He was asked by King George II to write the music because the king wanted some music and fireworks to celebrate the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (the end of a war). This piece of music is baroque.

Farewell Mrs Wood :(

Mrs Wood, one of our LSAs in Year 5, will be finishing at St Mark’s next Friday. She has worked at St Mark’s for over 8 years, working in a variety of year groups and roles. We will miss her, and wish her all the best in her new adventures: she is going on to work for a charity that helps adults overcome their barriers to employment. Thank you for all you’ve given, Mrs Wood!

FOSM Updates

A huge thank you to you and our FOSM team for helping our children. Recent purchases from your giving include:

  • New PE equipment – used in all year groups
  • New Chromebooks and headphones- used for computing lessons and interventions
  • Sand for our Year R and Year 1 sand pits, as well as storage sheds
  • Astro turf for outside Year 1 and Year 2
  • Wireless microphones for school performances for all year groups
  • Ongoing resources for the farm and forest school
  • A new paper trimmer
  • … and Friday’s disco raised over £1,000 – amazing!

🍬🍭 Sweet Jars 🍭🍬

Thank you so much to those of you who have already sent in a sweet jar for the Sweet Tombola at the Christmas Fayre. If you would like to help, please can we ask that the sweets are wrapped – see picture.  The jars can be jam jars, pasta sauce jars any kind or size, as long as they are clean. Any donations would be greatly received. Thank you!

Saint-Saens was a French composer. Danse Macabre means Dance of Death. Can you hear the harp at the beginning of the piece of music playing a single note 12 times? This is to represent midnight.

11 October 2024 – Newsletter – BBC, Foodbank, Timers and more

Headlines

  • Thanks to your donations, we gave 391.36kg of food to Foodbank on Monday, which is equivalent to 932 meals. Thank you!
  • Huge thanks to the FOSM team for putting on the school disco, and staff for supporting it. We hope your children had fun.
  • Sophia, Jackson and Harry were interviewed by BBC South yesterday, and will hopefully be on TV on Monday – this is the day the council make the decision about the SCPOs (lollipop ladies). And welcome to our new School Crossing Patrol Officer, Mrs Anne Duggan.
  • There was a collision between two cars on Thursday morning by the Woodbury/Danebury Road roundabout. If anyone was a witness to it, please let us know.
  • Timer alert! At our parents’ evening sessions, class teachers will have a 10minute timer up on the board. Don’t be offended, we just have to keep to time!

Come to our Parent Drop-In

Our next session will be on Monday 14th October at 8:30am-9:30am in the church.

During the session, the school nursing team will be in attendance to support with any toiletting, eating or sleeping concerns you may have.

Mrs Elms and Mrs Haynes will be there to welcome you with tea, coffee and biscuits. Younger children are also able to attend.

Final call – Parents Evenings

Booking for our Autumn Term parents evenings will close on Monday 14th Oct at 12pm.  Click here to book.

You are invited to book a 10 minute appointment to meet with your child’s class teacher(s) in person. Appointments will run from 3:40pm to 6:50pm on both evenings. You will have received an email from school on Tuesday 24th September with details about how to book online.  

  • Weds 16th October (1/2) 3:40pm-6:50pm
  • Weds 23rd October (2/2) 3:40pm-6:50pm
