Spring 1 Learning Update – Terrible Tudors
Made by Jack T and Braden – Class 5SP
Maths
This half term we have been learning about fractions, short multiplication, long multiplication and the short division method (bus stop method).
English
This half term we have been learning about Spy Master (a book by Jan Burchett and Sara Vogler) and then we wrote our own story of Spy Master. We would score this a 10/10 book and would definitely recommend you read it. After we finished that, we did a diary entry of a Tudor girl or a Tudor boy!
PE
In PE, we did volleyball, which was very fun and a bit hard. We had to learn set shots, dig shots and one handed serves before playing some tournaments. We also did gymnastics which was a bit of a challenge but quite fun as we got to use lots of the benches and horses.
Art
We did self portraits of ourselves and things around it that link to us because the Tudor monarchs loved portraits too. To do these, we used our own sets of sketching pencils from B-6B and applied lots of different sketching techniques. Miss Burgess also came in and did mono printing of King Henry VIII’s wives with 5SP.
Computing
In Computing, we did our own animations using Stop Animation software on ipads. We used playdough and plasticine to create animations that were tudor themed, which was very cool! We learned a new skill of onion skimming too. Ask your child what that means… it has nothing to do with actual onions!
Science
In Science, we learned about reversible and irreversible changes. Our favourite experiment was then we put a fizzy tablets into different liquids, inside a film canister, to see which EXPLODED the fastest. We learned about how carbon dioxide was created and blew the lids off!
Horrible History!
In History, we have been learning about the Tudors and about King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I. We’ve learned about King Henry VIII’s wives, looked at his portraits and learned about how he made his own religion. When learning about Queen Elizabeth I, we also looked at her portraits and why she ended up looking younger in them. She once had an artist put in prison for painting a portrait on her that she didn’t like! Can you believe that? We had to decide at the end who was the greatest Tudor monarch. Why not ask your child who they chose and why?
French
We have been learning about the weather and we are going to do a weather forecast in French!
Music
We have been thinking about different colours while listening to music all linked to the Hindu Holi Festival of Colour.
Autumn 2 Learning Update – Globetrotting Around North America
Maths
Last half term in Maths, we did lots of fractions! We added them, subtracted them, compared them and found equivalent fractions. We learned about mixed number fractions and improper fractions. We multiplied and subtracted them to find the equivalent and to make it easier to solve word problems.
D&T
In D&T, we have used hacksaws, hot glue guns, pens and pencils to make wooden truss bridges. Here are some photographs of some bridges that we made:
English
In English, we wrote a travel brochure for Mexico and incorporated lots of Year 5 grammar, like relative clauses. The children then wrote the last two stanzas from the poem called the Highwayman. Here are some pieces of published work:
Geography
In Geography, we learnt all about North America and the biomes in it. We made maps with the different biomes and coloured them in differently. We also learned about all the different features of the land – human and physical, as well as understanding the weather. We wish we could visit North America – it sounds like the most amazing place!
French
This term in French we have learnt how to say all the numbers up to 31, we have learnt how to say all the days of the week in French and months of the year. This has helped us write sentences, which say when our birthdays are!

What another amazing half term of learning in Year 5! The children really worked their socks off across the curriculum and made all the staff incredibly proud!
Happy New Year from the Year 5 Team!
What an incredible half term the Year 5 children have had! We are so very proud of how well the children have settled into their new classes and also how motivated they have been about their learning – Space has proven to be a very popular subject this year! Below is a little snippet of just some of the amazing work that the children have completed over the last seven weeks.
English
The children have written fantastic stories based on the video ‘One Small Step’ and some really informative non-chronological reports based on the animals found upon the fictional planet of Pandora! See some examples of incredible literacy work below:
Art
The children have shown so much creativity in Art as they have experimented with so many different painting skills – painting on different surfaces, using different paint types, exploring with their paint mixing and also layering up different painting techniques. Look at how amazing their final pieces turned out!
Super Science – Learning through experiments and an amazing school trip!
The children have shown the most amazing thirst for knowledge through their Science learning this half term and have loved learning about Space. They have completed some awesome experiments in class, read about inspirational (and less well known) scientists and had an awesome trip to the Winchester Science Centre too. On the school trip, the children took part in a rocket themed workshop, explored the Space exhibition, explored the whole floor of other science experiments and also watched a show all about our solar system in the planetarium. What a way to finish the half term!
We hope the children have enjoyed their learning as much as we have enjoyed teaching them. We also wish you a restful half term and look forward to welcoming the children back into school for our next topic – Globetrotting around North America!
