Year 2 – Monday 20th April

Good Morning Year 2

We hope you are all really well and have enjoyed a restful Easter holiday. What was your favourite part of the holiday? Maybe it was spending time with your family, enjoying the sunshine, or eating some chocolate. We hope you are rested and ready for another day of learning. Today we are going to be starting an exciting new topic, and we think you will enjoy this one! Read on through the post to find out what it is!

Remember to take regular breaks, get some exercise, and wash your hands carefully.

A word of encouragementblank

Firstly, Thank you. We know that completing school work at home can be challenging for both children and parents and we appreciate all of the effort you have all made with this so far. You have all been amazing and the majority of responses we have received has been overwhelmingly positive. We’ve loved seeing all of your work too! Whilst we think it is important to keep some elements of school work ticking over, to keep some form of routine for you at home, and to keep skills continuing and developing for our children, we recognise that everyone’s circumstances are different and that life at the moment is extremely challenging. With this in mind, please complete as much as you can, but remember there are no expectations, so do not put yourselves under any unnecessary pressure- you can approach this work as flexibly as you like and adapt what you do as much as you need. Your’s and your children’s well being is far more important to us. To help make the expectation more manageable for all, we are now putting two main learning activities on each day with a smaller third craft or similar short activity. We anticipate this taking an hour to an hour and a half each day. This can be completed in smaller sessions across the day as needed. We hope this is helpful but please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any queries or concerns.

Pirate Treasure!

blank

At the bottom of this section, hidden as a video, you will need to use our usual password to unlock the first of our pirate clues and our secret pirate code. Pesky Pirates have hidden parts of the treasure map in each of the teacher’s houses. You will need to use the secret pirate code to unscramble the message about where each part of the map is and then can send us your answers. Then Year 2 teachers will check in their houses to try and find the parts of the map. We will have to use our teamwork for this and hopefully by the end of our unit we will be able to put the map together and find the treasure! Good Luck Me Hearties!

We would also love to hear from you all and see your lovely work. You can contact us on: year2@stmarksce.org.uk. Feel free to contact us if you need the password too! Have a lovely day.

Many thanks,

Year 2 Team

Helpful Reminders

Don’t forget you can email us on year2@stmarksce.org.uk. We would love to hear from you if you have a question, need a password, need some help, want to show us your work or even just say hello! Please get your grown up’s permission before you email us. We look forward to hearing from you. We may not reply the same day!

Presentation – Please remember to do your very best work. Handwriting and presentation are as important at home as they are in school. You can complete your work in a book or if you need lined or squared paper you can get it here.

Note for parents: Hopefully your children will enjoy working through these activities and can do independently. We completely understand it may be difficult to complete all these tasks due to other family commitments or you are working from home, so please do not worry; complete what you can with your child.

Additional Ongoing Daily Activities – (to be completed instead of or as well as other tasks as needed)

Here are some additional activities for you to have a go at each day if you choose to. Please feel free to do as much or as little of these as you wish. We have added a handwriting booklet that you could work through very gradually, not in one go. You can either print the booklet, or do this onto paper of your own at home. We look forward to seeing how amazing your handwriting will be when we see your work. The Common Exception Words should also be learnt gradually, by selecting 2 or 3 words a week that you should aim to learn along side your weekly spellings.

  • 20 minutes of reading either a school book or a home book.
  • Practice your 2,5 and 10 times tables using TTRockstars, or a different method.
  • Practice your weekly spellings which will be provided below, and the Year 2 Common Exception Words.

English

In English, over the next few weeks, we will be basing our learning around Pirates, and learning about different techniques that we can use to add description to engage the reader. Over this week, on each day,  we will be thinking about how we can use: 1) different sentence types, 2) expanded noun phrases and 3) simile; to describe characters. Towards the end of the week, on Thursday, we will show off all of these skills to write our own character descriptions of a pirate. On Friday, we will have our weekly grammar hammer activity. Next week, we will develop our skills as adventure story writers so that we can write our own pirate adventure story. In your spare time, you may like to read any pirate story books you have and watch any pirate films such as Disney’s Peter Pan to begin to develop your ideas.

For today, we are going to begin by using the super story ‘The Night Pirates’ by Peter Harris and Deborah Allwright.

We are going to write a blurb for the book using the four different sentence types: statements, questions, exclamations and commands. Blurbs are usually put on the back cover of books, to give a brief summary of the story, and to tempt you to buy and read the book. You may want to look at the back cover of books you have at home to help develop your ideas. Blurbs are usually quite short and can be achieved in 3 or 4 well chosen sentences.

The blurb that you write could be written by hand or typed and you may like to draw a picture with it and/or use bubble writing.

Maths

Today in Maths, we are going to be continuing our work on fractions using the White Rose Maths resources. Today’s lesson with explore finding three quarters of an amount.

As suggested previously, the use of concrete resources to model this concept will really help your child to get to grips with quite a challenging concept. You could do this by collecting some toys or sweets (or anything else you may have in your home), before splitting the whole amount into 4 equal groups. Perhaps you could put an extra toy in one group to make the groups unequal and ask your child to spot your mistake. You can then count how many toys are in 3 of the 4 groups to find three quarters.

As with the other Maths lessons shared, there is a video to help explore this concept, as well as an activity sheet to complete. You can then check your answers using the answer sheet provided. Please click on the first link below to access the White Rose page, before completing ‘Lesson 1’ in ‘Summer Term – Week 1’. Please email us if you have any questions regarding this. Good luck!

Topic

Today’s additional activity is to have a go at making your very own parrot! A pirate’s favourite companion is a parrot, so perhaps you can follow the guide attached to help you make a parrot out of paper. Remember to ask an adult to help you with the cutting.
