Year 2 – Thursday 23rd April

Good Morning Year 2

Ahoy there Year 2,

How are you today? We hope you’ve had a good balanced breakfast and drunk your orange juice- we don’t want you getting scurvy (a common pirate illness due to lack of vitamin C)!  We hope you are enjoying all of our pirate activities and we are loving seeing all of your work and hearing all about your pirate fun!

Pirate Clues!  Ahoy Me Hearties!

You are still doing well with all of our pirate clues. Yesterday’s one got us busy hunting around our garden’s. Mrs Rosso eventually found it hidden by the large shrub near her shed! It certainly got us all active!  Make sure you check out today’s clue in our secret hiding place below. We really need to find all of the pieces of this map! We’ve heard other pirate crews are on the hunt for the treasure too!

We would love to hear from you and see your lovely work, so please do not hesitate to email us at year2@stmarksce.org.uk. Enjoy your day!

Many thanks,

Year 2 Team

Helpful Reminders

Don’t forget you can email us on year2@stmarksce.org.uk. We would love to hear from you if you have a question, need a password, need some help, want to show us your work or even just say hello! Please get your grown up’s permission before you email us. We look forward to hearing from you. We may not reply the same day!

Presentation – Please remember to do your very best work. Handwriting and presentation are as important at home as they are in school. You can complete your work in a book or if you need lined or squared paper you can get it here.

Note for parents: Hopefully your children will enjoy working through these activities and can do independently. We completely understand it may be difficult to complete all these tasks due to other family commitments or you are working from home, so please do not worry; complete what you can with your child.

Additional Ongoing Daily Activities

Here are some additional activities for you to have a go at each day if you choose to. Please feel free to do as much or as little of these as you wish. We have added a handwriting booklet that you could work through very gradually, not in one go. You can either print the booklet, or do this onto paper of your own at home. We look forward to seeing how amazing your handwriting will be when we see your work. The Common Exception Words should also be learnt gradually, by selecting 2 or 3 words a week that you should aim to learn along side your weekly spellings.

  • 20 minutes of reading either a school book or a home book.
  • Practice your 2,5 and 10 times tables using TTRockstars, or a different method.
  • Practice your weekly spellings which will be provided below, and the Year 2 Common Exception Words.

English

In English today, we will be planning and writing our pirate character description. You can do this across two days if you would prefer with one day of planning and one day of writing. Tomorrow’s task will be a grammar hammer task which can be done at another time if you’d prefer.

In our character description we will be aiming to use all of the skills that we have been learning this week so try to use different sentence types, expanded noun phrases and similes to describe your character. It would be good to describe both your character’s appearance and their personality so aim to have two sections or paragraphs with at least 4 or 5 sentences in each. Challenge yourself and take a risk! You can do it!

You can write about one of the pirate characters in the pictures provided or you could draw and create your own. You could also use any pirate books or films that you have watched to give you ideas. We look forward to reading them.

Maths

Today in maths, we will be continuing our unit on measure by exploring recognising and measuring metres. To explore this, it may first be useful to have a go at making your own metre stick. This will allow you to talk about the idea that a metre is bigger than a cm, because there are 100 cm’s in a metre. You could do this by measuring and sticking bits of cardboard together using a ruler and some tape, allowing your child to visually see how long a metre is. Perhaps you could then measure your child, and measure yourself to see how tall you both are in metres.

As with the other maths lessons shared, there is a video to help explore this concept, as well as an activity sheet to complete. You can then check your answers using the answer sheet provided. Please click on the first link below to access the White Rose page, before completing ‘Lesson 4’ in ‘Summer Term – Week 1’. Please email us if you have any questions regarding this. Good luck!

Topic

Today’s extra activity is to have a go at making some pirate biscuits! Remember to use the ingredients you already have available to you at home, or pick the ingredients up when you do your essential weekly shop. Alternatively, you could cut some circles out of paper and decorate them with pirate faces using colouring pens.
