19th November Newsletter – Odd Socks, Christmas, Vacancies and more!
A note from Mr Applegate
We’ve had lots going on this week! Our focus on ‘One Kind Word’ and Odd Socks Day has had the children thinking about why we must be kind and understanding that everyone is different and that is good! Thank you to everyone who sent in pictures of your odd sock locations!
Thank you for your generosity today for Children In Need, too. It’s been a fun day all round.
We’re also getting ready for Christmas. It’s lovely to hear the children singing and practicing songs for videos and carol singing – see below.
A huge welcome to Mrs Villeneuve, who joins us as our new Finance Assistant in our office team. And a huge well done to Mrs Barbour, who is our new Site Manager!

If you would like to apply for the position please email the school office for an application form at adminoffice@st-markscofe.hants.sch.uk
Christmas at St Mark’s!
Instead of our normal carol services inside, we’re doing things a bit differently this year. Come and join for “Carols around the tree” on our KS1 playground. Fingers crossed for the weather!
Each year group will be performing 1 song, and there will be several Christmas songs for everyone to sing together (we’ll provide the words!). Wrap up warm and perhaps wear your Christmas jumper. Join in the magic of Christmas!
Your children will need to be with you throughout the event, apart from the time when they are performing their chosen song.
When and where?
All on the KS1 playground. Enter the school via the side gates as usual.

School Car Park
Could we please remind all parents that only parents with permission to use our car park should be parking there for drop-off and pick-up.
If you are coming in for Breakfast Club, you can use the car park too.
Since the barrier was damaged, we have noticed a huge increase in cars using the car park every day, which is causing congestion and difficulty for staff to park.
We really appreciate your co-operation and understanding to avoid using the school car park and parking at the community centre instead.
For those who do need to use the car park, please avoid parking in the spaces next to Dandelions Pre-School, as these are reserved for Dandelions staff.
Thank you
Flu Vaccines
Please see the message below from the School Age Immunisation Team
The E-Consent programme for your school is now closed, but will reopen the day after the flu immunisation session. Any parent/carer who still wishes to consent for flu immunisation will be able to do so then and book onto a local clinic. Please ensure that you have the school code from the original email to add to the school field on the form.
Once you have completed the form and received the confirmation email, please go to:
https://www.southernhealthimmunisations.co.uk/ClinicBooking/Booking
You will be able to select a clinic, date and time. You will need your booking reference to book a clinic appointment, if this is not on your confirmation email, please email your child’s name, date of birth and school to northwesthantsimmunisationteam@southernhealth.nhs.uk and we can provide this.
Please note our school code is SH131450

FOSM – Support Our School!
The ‘Friends of St Mark’s’ (FOSM) was formed early in the life of the school. All parents are automatically members and our committee organises social events for children and adults and fund-raising events such as Key Stage discos, Easter Egg Hunts and Summer Fun days.
Over the last few years the ‘Friends’ have donated money that has contributed towards extra resources to benefit the children at St. Mark’s which has included playground equipment, books for the school library, and general school funds. We are now a registered charity, too. Charity number: 1188879

What a fun couple of weeks we have had! The children have settled back well this half term and we are racing quickly towards Christmas! They have worked hard with their learning about the Great Fire of London and now know lots of amazing facts. Please use our knowledge organiser below to quiz your child and see what they have learnt about how the fire started and why it spread so quickly. They should also be able to tell you about how London changed after the fire.
Year 2 Surprising Journeys Knowledge Organiser 2021
We have also had a great time learning about the surprising journey of the Rainbow Crow in the lovely book ‘The Crow’s Tail’ written by Naomi Howarth. We have just written our own story based on Michael Morpurgo’s beautiful book ‘Coming Home’, where the children used the skills that they had learnt from our sentence stacking lessons to write their own exciting journey story.
In our next unit, we will use our history learning to write some historical diary entries about the Great Fire of London.
Hey Ewe!
Christmas is quickly approaching and we have begun talking about our Christmas play. Due to the ongoing need to keep everyone well during the Christmas period, we are again doing this by video. Children have been invited to take part in the play as either speaking actors, actors with no lines, narrators, dancers or instrumentalists. Please reassure children that there will be plenty of time to practise and that there will be no live audience to worry about. We will send lines out today (Friday) and will begin rehearsals next week. Parts will be split across the threes classes and most of those with speaking parts will only have a few lines to learn. Please support your child in learning any lines that we send home. Thank you.
We will require some simple costumes and a letter is also coming home about this. There is no expectation to buy expensive costumes and we would encourage you to use items that you or the children already have at home. If you have any difficulties, please speak to your child’s class teacher as we may be able to support with items that we have in school.
PE
Our PE day will continue to be Wednesday but we will be using our hall slot to rehearse for the play so will be doing outdoor PE lessons on the Wednesday, where this is possible. Please ensure children are dressed in appropriate outdoor PE kit on these days. They should no longer be wearing shorts and should now be in jogging bottoms. Coats should be brought in everyday and children can also bring in named hats, scarfs, gloves and ear muffs.
Election Call!
Please remember that the closing dates for applications for School Council, Eco-Committee and Christian Voice Ambassadors is: Wednesday 24th November. Completed forms MUST be handed in by this date (and ideally before). Children are also encouraged to make posters to promote themselves amongst their classes. These will be put up in classrooms and children will be given the opportunity to tell their classes why they think they would be good at the role. We are delighted that the children will again be able to take on these important roles to support our year group and school community.
Thank you for all of your support. If you have any questions or concerns, please email us at year2@stmarksce.org.uk

Support FOSM by bidding on a Liverpool shirt!
Know someone who might enjoy a Liverpool polo shirt, signed by some classic players? The perfect Christmas gift perhaps?! This shirt was donated by a parent, and all proceeds will go towards the school.
Thank you for sharing!
Year 6 Remembrance Poems
What poignant and brilliant poems our Year 6 pupils wrote last week!
Once again I am called to war,
told to put my life on the line,
made to leave my loved ones,
forced away to the trenches,
Once again.
Once again fear fills me,
anxiety brings doubt,
I worry for my future,
for if ever again I will feel
the spring breeze on my skin,
the cold winter chill,
Once again.
Once again I will hear bullets,
the bombs obliterating the soil,
the people screaming in pain,
the German soldiers laughing,
Once again.
Once again I will have to try to
kill many people, who may not
want to kill me.
