18th November Newsletter – Odd Socks Winners, Christmas and more!

  • Can you help at the Christmas Fayre? We need you!! Can you spare an hour or so to help run a stall or provide breaks to others? Please email secretary.fosm@stmarksce.org.uk to let us know what you can do. An hour’s help would make all the difference! Thank you
  • Some After School Clubs have only one last session this coming week (w/c 21st Nov) – please see our clubs section below for details
  • We have now sent out our new-look Spring term After School Club form. Deadline closes on Tuesday 22nd November at midday. Children already attending choir (KS2 or Year 2) will continue with these clubs.
  • Year R and Year 6 have been assigned buddies and have had their first meetings! They were amazing!
  • Pastoral Drop-In Session

    The St Mark’s pastoral team will be hosting a parent and carer drop-in session every half term, each with a different focus.

    Our second session will be looking at supporting children to manage anger and strong emotions.

    Mrs Atherton, Mrs Delves and Mrs Elms will be on hand to chat through any concerns, with a cup of tea and a biscuit 🙂.

    Please join us on Monday 21st October from 8.30am to 9.30am in the church (younger children welcome too!).

Hymn to the Fallen by John Williams (1932 – )

This piece of music composed by John Williams was written for a film called Saving Private Ryan which was set in World War 2. It is a beautiful piece of music written to remember all those who lost their lives in war

  • Year 6 children and staff have had a wonderful week at their residential trip to Windmill Hill. Thank you to the staff that attended and well done to the children for representing the school so well.
  • A reminder that our Bags2School drop-off times are this Thursday 10th Nov and our FOSM school disco is this Friday 11th Nov – click here for info
  • Don’t forget to book tickets for the Christmas performances. Booking closes on Sunday 13th November. Click the following to book!  We will confirm tickets w/c 21st November
  • Gates reminder – the gates open at 8.30pm and close PROMPTLY at 8.50pm. We politely request that parents/carers have left the school premises by 8.50am thank you
  • School car park – our car park is small and easily becomes congested. We operate a permit system and ask all permit holders to clearly display their ID. We do request those without a permit and/or permission to use the car park to use alternatives please
  • Arbor app – we now have 86% of parents using our Arbor app! It has really helped us to keep our information up-to-date. Thank you to those that have used it and sent us data change requests. If you haven’t logged in yet and need any help please do let us know.

Odd Socks Day and Anti-Bullying Week

During the week beginning Monday 14th November, we will be celebrating Anti-Bullying Week at St Mark’s! The theme this year is ‘Reach Out’. To kick the week off, we will be starting with an Odd Socks Day on Monday 14th November!

WHAT IS ODD SOCKS DAY?

Odd Socks Day is a key part of Anti-Bullying Week! To celebrate that we are all unique, we ask that children wear odd socks to school on Monday 14th November. Last year over 13,000 schools took part in Odd Socks Day and again this year, we are joining them!

WHY IS ODD SOCKS DAY IMPORTANT?

The day sends an important message to pupils that they should be allowed to be themselves, free from bullying and helps us celebrate Anti-Bullying Week in a fun and positive way. We will be completing fun activities during the day and the rest of the week, which will help us celebrate both our differences and our unity within our St Mark’s community.

WHAT DO WE NEED FROM YOU?

  1. Make sure your child wears odd socks to school on Monday 14th November!
  2. Help your child enter our school competition! On Google Classrooms, we would like the children to submit their best animal ‘odd socks’ photograph by Thurs 17th November! The deadline for entries will be Thursday 17th November so that we have time to choose the winners. Winners will be announced on Friday 18th November in Celebration Worship!

Book fair is coming

In the coming weeks, we have our school book fair. It’s a chance for children to become excited about books and enjoy reading. There are a variety of books on sale, and the school gets commission for each book sold.

If you’d like your child to visit the book fair stall, please send them in with an amount between £3 and £10 in cash in a named envelope on the day below. For Year R and Year 1, the book fair is after school in the Key Stage 1 playground – please can parents/carers attend with your child.

If you would prefer to pay online and not physically visit the book fair, you can do so here.

Music of the week!

Music for the Royal Fireworks by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)

Music for the Royal Fireworks is a group of five pieces for orchestra composed by German George Frideric Handel in 1749. He was asked by King George II to write the music because the king wanted some music and fireworks to celebrate the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (the end of a war). This piece of music is baroque.

About FOSM

The ‘Friends of St Mark’s’ (FOSM) was formed early in the life of the school. All parents are automatically members and our committee organises social events for children and adults and fund-raising events such as Key Stage discos, Easter Egg Hunts and Summer Fun days.

Over the last few years the ‘Friends’ have donated money that has contributed towards extra resources to benefit the children at St. Mark’s which has included playground equipment, books for the school library, and general school funds. We are now a registered charity, too. Charity number: 1188879

A note regarding portions!

Our wonderful catering firm Pabulum do not want hungry children after lunch! Children are permitted seconds if they show clean plates from first sitting. However there are a few rules to promote healthy habits as follows:
 
– a second portion will comprise a carb and vegetables in the first instance and children will be encouraged to revisit the salad bar.  Seconds protein will only be given if this is eaten first
– dessert seconds will ALWAYS be fruit, even if a student has chosen fruit to start with

Saint-Saens was a French composer. Danse Macabre means Dance of Death. Can you hear the harp at the beginning of the piece of music playing a single note 12 times? This is to represent midnight.

The ‘Friends of St Mark’s’ (FOSM) was formed early in the life of the school. All parents are automatically members and our committee organises social events for children and adults and fund-raising events such as Key Stage discos, Easter Egg Hunts and Summer Fun days.

Over the last few years the ‘Friends’ have donated money that has contributed towards extra resources to benefit the children at St. Mark’s which has included playground equipment, books for the school library, and general school funds. We are now a registered charity, too. Charity number: 1188879

This week’s top news & reminders

  • We’re holding a harvest worship on Monday 17th October. If you are able, please bring in an item from the Foodbank list which will be given to support those in need.
  • Reminder: Non-uniform day on Friday 21st October (please wear PE-suitable shoes if it is a PE day). Spare change donations at the gates.
  • Parents evenings upcoming this week – Monday 17th Oct & Wednesday 19th Oct. Remember to log in prior to your video meeting at least 5 minutes before your appointment, or arrive in good time for in-person appointments and head to your classroom. If your child is in a club, see the after-school club changes below on these dates.
  • Arbor Parents App! Please let us know if you haven’t received your login details. Thank you to those that have logged in already – we are currently at 47% uptake but would love to see all parents using it.
  • Clubs sign-up for Spring term may only be through Arbor – another reason to make sure you have the app.
  • We will be holding a sibling photo session in November – we will confirm the date as soon as we can

  • Thank you to those who park sensibly. We had 3 parents raise concerns about St Mark’s parents parking on the bus stop, causing traffic delays and safety issues. 

FOSM Update

Thank you so much for your Christmas Card orders- the online system has worked well. Massive thanks to our FOSM team for organising!

So far we have raised £21,766 towards our £37,000 target – that’s 59% of the total needed for our outdoor revamp.

Successful Grants for New Playground Equipment

Through grants from the government and the diocese, we’ve been able to order this playground equipment to replace our condemned version on KS2. This is seperate to any FOSM funding but brilliant news nonetheless. On our new version, children from Years R to 6 will be able to enjoy it. The children voted on their favourite items to include. We’re working on installation date and will keep you posted.

Pupil Voice groups

Well done to all our pupils who put themselves forward for one of our pupil voice groups, and especially to those who were elected. We enjoyed a serious election day with genuine polling booths and ballot boxes, too.

Pastoral drop-in session

The St Mark’s pastoral team will be hosting a parent and carer drop-in session every half term, each with a different focus.

Our first session will be looking at separation anxiety. Mrs Atherton, Mrs Delves and Mrs Elms will be on hand to chat through any concerns, with a cup of tea and a biscuit 🙂.
