Welcome to the Daily Maths Challenge!

Hello to Parents and Children and welcome to our ‘Daily Maths Challenge’ page!
This page is designed to give additional Maths challenge for more able mathematicians or even for children who simply just love Maths!
From Monday to Friday, an activity will be uploaded with a theme for the day along with three levels of challenge so that children in Key Stage 1 and 2 can access these. These Mathematical challenges will require thinking, problem solving and investigative skills. As a rough guide, level 1 is aimed at Key Stage 1 children, Level 2 is aimed at Year 3 and 4 pupils and Level 3 is aimed at Year 5 and 6 pupils.
Please remember that these are additional tasks which are not necessarily related to what the children are learning in their own year group so please ensure that the children have completed the work set out by their class teacher first.
The ‘Daily Maths Challenges’ will appear below where you can view and then download them as a PDF. Scroll down to see the latest daily challenge, but all previous days will remain archived on the Maths Page.
Feel free to email me on d.goddard@st-markscofe.hants.sch.uk with any questions. Have fun Mathematicians!

Family Mental Health
Good afternoon everyone, I hope you are all keeping safe and well.
I have copied a link to a website regarding looking after your family’s mental heath during this period. There are some helpful tips on there and I wanted to share it with you.
If anyone wants some help regarding mental health or pastoral resources, please feel free to contact me and I can try and help or signpost you to some help.
Take care and stay safe.

Message from Mr Applegate
I hope you’ve had a good weekend. Hasn’t the weather generally been great recently?! Our school grounds are looking good in the sun – see our homepage for a selection of photos.
This week, our home learning begins again. Please remember that the activities on the year group pages are suggestions, and a toned-down version of what we would try to cover in school. We completely understand that with multiple children, working from home and/or limited technology/resources available, it can make home learning stressful. Better to do less, do it well, and reduce stress, than to try to do everything and … well, you know! Our teachers are available to help via the year group emails, too.
Zoom class meets will be happening this week and next, if they haven’t already happened. You’ll receive an email from the office at some point, giving the details of dates, times and links. We aim to do zoom class meetings roughly every 3 weeks.
Please do check your emails regularly, including your junk/spam folders. If you’re not receiving anything, please let us know by sending an email to adminoffice@st-markscofe.hants.sch.uk. Thank you.
And a huge thank you to to Mrs Silvester, Mrs Boyle and Mrs Mitchell for creating the ‘Hair’ video, and Jack’s mum (Y1) for creating the artwork video montage. Well done children for sending in your posters. They are great! See the next challenge in our newsletter. Enjoy!
Have a good week, Mr Applegate
Go Fund Me – FOSM Top Up Fundraiser
As we can’t run any FOSM events at school, the FOSM team are running a GoFundMe donation page. If you are able to donate, then please click on the FOSM logo. Thank you :)
Our target is £3,500 – we’re getting there, and will keep the page open whilst we are off school.

Remember, if you change your contact details, please let the office know here.
Send a picture of hope
Could you email in a drawing or poster to bring a smile to a member of Immanuel Church?! Rev May has been in touch, saying that it would be so good for the members to have a drawing given to each member of Immanuel, just to say hello and bring a smile!
If you can help, simply take a picture of what you’ve done and email it to posters@stmarksce.org.uk. Rev May will then deliver these to the church members.
Thank you!
BBC Learning
You may have heard about the BBC offering lessons and learning activities. We are doing lots of work behind the scenes to work out what is best for the children at St Mark’s. We will continue with the home learning activities we are setting, which may include some of the BBC activities, but not exclusively. We are very mindful that our children will return to St Mark’s learning at some point, and want to make sure they have the best chance of not missing out on the St Mark’s learning programme.
Basingstoke & Deane Council – Communication
Changes to waste collections
From Monday 20 April Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council will collect your grey waste bin fortnightly instead of weekly. This is a temporary change during the COVID-19 pandemic. Your recycling collection will take place as usual and your waste bin will be emptied on the opposite week. Your collection day will not change. There’s lots more information on the council’s website here https://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/covid-19-bins-and-recycling
Some key points to note are:
– This is a temporary change.
– If you have a grey 140 litre waste bin you can leave out two additional bags for collection.
– If you have a grey 240 litre waste bin this will be sufficient and no additional bags will be taken.
– If you have a large family you can apply for an additional bin if you do not already have one.
– Assisted collections will continue.
– Clinical waste collections will continue.
– Recycling and glass collections will continue as normal.
– Please recycle as much as you can and follow the advice on our website.
– Start looking at how much waste you throw away and how you can reduce this by buying differently.
– Start squashing your waste, like yoghurt pots, to maximise the capacity of your grey bin.
Community Hub
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is working closely with Hampshire County Council, Basingstoke Voluntary Action and community groups in the borough as part of the Basingstoke and Deane Community Hub. A new Coronavirus Hampshire Helpline – Hantshelp4vulnerable – has been set up to help residents who are having to stay in their home, (for example as they are over 70 or have a medical condition), and do not have help from family and friends. You can register for urgent support such as access to essential food or household supplies and collection of medication. The helpline is available seven days a week, from 9am to 5pm, by calling 0333 370 4000. For more information about the support available in your area, please visit www.bvaction.org.uk/basingstokedeane-community-hubs

Year 6 – Monday, 20th April, 2020
Good Morning Year 6 and Welcome to the Summer Term!
We truly hope you have enjoyed your Easter break from your studies with your families. Hopefully, you all got to relax, play games and watch movies so that you are now all raring to go for your new term in Year 6. This is always a busy term and even though the SATs have been cancelled, we still need to get ready to making you the best learners you can be before heading off to secondary school.
Our new project title for this half term is ‘What a Shock!’ We will be looking at electrical circuits in science, in art we’ll look at the world in a whole new way and our literacy tasks will help us to imagine the future with the help of a few robots and technological advances which may be around the corner in the history of our modern world.
We hope this is a great start to your week of learning!
We are so excited to see you all in our Zoom room on Wednesday – parents have been emailed all the information.
Mrs Silvester, Miss Pettitt and Mrs Chapman
Helpful Reminders
Don’t forget you can email us on year6@stmarksce.org.uk. We would love to hear from you if you have a question, need a password, need some help, want to show us your work or even just say hello! Please get your grown up’s permission before you email us. We look forward to hearing from you. We may not reply the same day!
Presentation – Please remember to do your very best work. Handwriting and presentation are as important at home as they are in school. You can complete your work in a book or if you need lined or squared paper you can get it here.
Note for parents: Hopefully your children will enjoy working through these activities and can do independently. We completely understand it may be difficult to complete all these tasks due to other family commitments or you are working from home, so please do not worry; complete what you can with your child.
Ongoing Daily Activities
As well as the learning tasks we upload each day, there are a few ‘extras’ that you could have a go at, if you get time.
TTRockstars – Play 5 garage games + 5 studio games. Mrs Silv will be online at 11am today in the Year 6 Arena area! Her TT Rockstar name is Harmony Powers.
Reading – Read for at least 20 minutes every day.
Weekly spellings – Practise these everyday in your spelling booklets – your new weekly sheet will be uploaded each Monday. Week 1 Main Spelling List Week 1 Less Tricky Spelling List
Jae Malone, the author of ‘Silver Linings’ unfortunately could not visit us last month because of the Covid situation. However, she is incredibly keen to make sure we keep our imaginations fired and let our love of writing stories grow. Therefore, she has sent some fun ideas on how to create short stories. With these writing prompts you may be able to come up with a brand new story idea that no one else has ever thought of. You don’t have to write stories down, you may picture them in your mind or be a storyteller to members of your family.
Grid – Haunting things Grid One – People and Creatures Seaside Columns
As well as these fun story creating ideas, she has set us an exciting challenge. If you would like to win a signed set of Jae Malone’s trilogy, then why not enter her creative writing competition?
All you have to do is send your completed Indiana story from last term. If you have already sent us uploaded photos of your completed story or sent it as a Word document, then all you have to do is ask us to submit it to Jae’s competition. If you didn’t send us your completed story, you have until 4th May to complete your story and send it to us. Remember to use the year6@stmarksce.org.uk address for your entries.
Daily physical activity which you enjoy. Challenge yourself! Remember Joe Wicks is still there to keep us moving.
Maths
Let’s kick off the week with our Success in 7 week 1 task!
Once you have completed Monday’s column, please check through your answers and mark your work. If you got something wrong, please look through the answer sheet steps to see if you can see where you went wrong. If you don’t understand, please get in touch. We can explain it to you again. Monday answers Success in Seven
Today’s lesson for White Rose will be from Summer Term Week 1 Day 1. It’s all about Vertically Opposite Angles. Please make sure you are on the correct lesson. Watch the video and pause it to answer questions 1 to 4 before you continue to the end.
https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/
As always, please check your answers with the answer page and tick your correct your work. Remember mistakes are brilliant as they help us learn.
English.
We won’t be setting new English work today except for making a start on your new spelling list. The main spelling list takes adjectives and their corresponding abstract nouns. For example, hesitant describes someone and hesitance is what they show or have inside them when they are feeling hesitant. Make sure you download your new list and practise the first column when you understand what each pair of words mean.
In the ongoing activities section, you will find some ideas from Jae Malone (the author who was due to visit us last month). She has very kindly given us some ideas on story creating games and has also set a competition! The lucky winner of this writing competition will receive a set of signed books by Jae Malone from her trilogy of ‘Silver Linings’. More details are given above in the Ongoing Daily Activities section.
Art – the work of Eric Joyner
This half-term, we will be learning about the American artist, Eric Joyner. His paintings are original ideas which portray two things he really loves:you will discover what these are as you explore today’s lesson. First, begin with today’s PowerPoint – it’s a slow reveal. So do take time between each slide to think what the whole painting might portray (show). By the end of the slide show, you should have found out what his two favourite objects are to paint.
Before you practise drawing some line drawings today, watch a short video where you can meet the artist.
