Year 3 Cook up a healthy dish
We have had a busy, yet exciting half term learning all about ‘What’s inside’. Year 3 have loved this science led unit and learnt lots about our bones and what we need to be healthy in D&T. This week in science, the children started to learn about their teeth and how we need to care for these. On Thursday, we set up an experiment to answer this key question, ‘What effect do different liquids have on our teeth?’ We used marble chips to represent our teeth, we then added these to water, apple juice, blackcurrant squash, lemonade and a monster energy drink. We made our predictions and will be looking back at this experiment after the Easter break. Get your children to tell you their prediction.
In D&T, we have enjoyed learning about where foods come from and also planning our own fruit tarts. The children then enjoyed making these and they certainly didn’t hang around for long on their plates. Why don’t you have a go at making these at home? Puff pastry, yogurt or jelly and lots of fruit!

Easter Newsletter
Happy Easter!
It’s been quite a term, and I’m sure we’re all glad to have made it to the end! Covid absences have made it very challenging throughout. Amazingly, we had 0 school closures and 0 supply teachers – testament to the amazing flexibility of the staff, and the phononemal staffing organisation of Mrs Ford. We are indebited to you all.
Missed the recent COVID update changes? Click here. Summary: The government narrative and expectation has changed around Covid. You don’t need to test anymore, and you should only be off school if you are unwell. In addition, from after Easter, teachers will set default work on Google Classroom for 3 days maximum, made up of more generic but relevant learning activities for your child. The work may not match the exact content of what is being done in their class on that day though, and live teaching will cease. I know you join me in thanking the staff for the huge dedication they have shown throughout the pandemic, going above and beyond what was expected.
The children have been amazing as they’ve finished their tests and completed their project work. I really am proud of the attitude shown by the children, and of course the progress they are making.
On behalf of the staff and governors at St Mark’s, may I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a wonderful Easter break.
FOSM Easter Egg Hunt
On Saturday, our FOSM Easter Egg Hunt took place. It was a brilliant time. Thank you everyone for taking part, and of course the FOSM team for organising and staff for supporting. And thank you to the Parish of Basingstoke Down for providing amazing refreshments!

Highlights of the week!
- Our Year R and Year 6 children (buddies!) had a Easter party, including an Egg Hunt and hot cross buns. Just lovely :)
- On Monday, our Year 2 choir performed to parents and carers. It was absolutely delightful. Not a dry eye in the house.
- Our Year 4 children led us in our Easter worship on Monday, helping us to think about why Easter is special.
- Our Year 4 and Year 5 children have heard about their exciting residential trips coming up in June and July.
- Today we celebrated Mrs Silvester and Miss Goddard’s last day before their maternity starts.
- We also said goodbye to Mrs Alsey – see the fantastic book below given as a leaving present. The children all contributed, with Miss Burgess as the master designer. As a school, we were able to go out on the field and sing a few songs as a goodbye, too. It was lovely to all be together. Mrs Alsey has given each child an ice-pop, although they didn’t all freeze in time, so some will recieve it after Easter.
Farewell gift to Mrs Alsey made by the children of St Mark’s

Year 5 Update – Spring 2
Written by Edward (5P) and Felicity (5F)
This half term, we have been very busy learning about the famous continent Europe. It’s been an astonishing and very engaging 6 weeks.
Marvellous Maths
This half term and last, we have been enjoying learning about fractions, unit fractions, equivalent fractions, improper fractions, mixed fractions, adding fractions, subtracting fractions, multiplying fractions by the integer, non-unit fractions and finally fractions of amounts! Throughout this half term, we have continued to use Flashback Maths to help us with our learning too!
Extravagant English
In English, we have been looking into the story of Migrants in our sentence stacking lessons. In this story, it features a little baby polar bear called Nanuk (meaning polar bear in Inuktitut) and his mother. Their Iceland home, in the Arctic region, melts and they get washed away into the icy Arctic sea. They wash up in Germany in the black forest, meeting several nasty, human- like brown bears, resulting in a slap to Nanuk!
At the end of this unit, we continued the story of Migrants in first person wondering where they might go next. We chose to send the bears to either Austria, the Netherlands or Latvia. We could choose as many plot points (paragraphs) as we wanted although it had to be 6 or above. We also had to choose writing lenses to show in different parts of the story. e.g a simile, alliteration or repetition.

Gorgeous Geography
In Geography, we have been comparing our locality with one in France located in the Alps – La Plagne. We have been looking into the unique weather, economy and features in La Plagne caused by the mixture of rushing wind and the high mountains.
Amazing Art
We have been experimenting with the background, middleground and the foreground using mixed media. We have been creating images of mountains by collaging. For our final piece we created, we used chalks, oil pastels, fine liners and paint to form a scene of La Plagne’s many mountains. We chose either Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter. Can you guess which picture represents which season?

Delightful Design Technology
Throughout this half term, we have been collecting research to make our very own spaghetti bolognese in groups of either 5 or 6. We all participated by bringing in a chosen ingredient and making a spag bol. To finish DT off, we taste-tested the meal for ourselves then reviewed it in the booklet that we had collected our information in.

Creative Computing
In this project, we have been learning about different websites online. We have discovered how to tell the difference between real facts and fake information. For our final project, we have been creating information posters too.
Ravishing R.E
Towards the end of this half term, we have improved our knowledge of The Easter story and Jesus. We have also learnt what Communion is to Christians. Communion is a special ceremony in which the priest blesses the bread and the wine to help Christians feel close to Jesus and remember his sacrifice. It is said in the bible stories that Jesus will return.
Sensational Science
Throughout this half term, we have been learning about the different forces that work in our world by using Newton-metres. During these 6 weeks, we have learned about a measure called Newtons (N). We experimented with our shoes to discover how much force it takes to move them. Some shoes took less force to move because they were smaller or they had more grip than others. In the last few days, we have also been learning about how gravity pulls us towards the ground. Also, we have learnt how cogs spin and make some mechanical objects work and mesh together.
***
In this half term, we have been learning about all sorts of different subjects, it has been very interesting and educational. It has helped us learn about the wonders of Europe and develop other skills too!
1st April Newsletter – Covid Changes, PE Days, Easter events and other important updates
A note from Mr Applegate

-
However, it is not recommended that children and young people are tested for COVID-19 unless directed to by a health professional.
- Whilst the government are now not recommending testing for Covid, if you do test and get a positive result, you should isolate for 5days as an adult and 3 days as a child, and then you finish isolation, without needing a negative test. Children can then return to school assuming they are well. No need to test negative.
-
The government is not expecting pupils or staff in schools to routinely test themselves for COVID-19.
- Tests aren’t available for free, and the school is not being given any more tests.
- See here for more information.

Have a great weekend! Mr Applegate

Match Funding Anyone?
What is match funding?
If you work for an organisation that has a match funding policy, any money we raise could be matched by your employer. Companies may match the fundraising total for a whole event. Usually, the employee will need to supply them with a letter from the PTA detailing the date and nature of the event, together with the total raised.
Does your employer have a match funding scheme?
You can contact your Human Resources Department to find out if your employer has a match funding scheme, or if they are willing to match funds at any of our events.
If your employer has a match funding policy, please do let us know, especially if you are already volunteering or thinking of volunteering at any PTA event.
Thank you in advance for looking into match funding. Every little really does help (and yes, Tesco do match fund!).
In worship this week…
We thought about the story of the unforgiven servant, and how we need to recycle forgiveness. As we are forgiven, we can then forgive!

The ‘Friends of St Mark’s’ (FOSM) was formed early in the life of the school. All parents are automatically members and our committee organises social events for children and adults and fund-raising events such as Key Stage discos, Easter Egg Hunts and Summer Fun days.
Over the last few years the ‘Friends’ have donated money that has contributed towards extra resources to benefit the children at St. Mark’s which has included playground equipment, books for the school library, and general school funds. We are now a registered charity, too. Charity number: 1188879
